Actually, "vodka" is the diminutive form of the word "voda" which means "water." It's not even medicine. It's just water for them. When I visit the relatives and friends of my wife in the Ukraine, everybody excpects to drink vodka with them. It would be awfully disrespectful to decline. I should add that she has a LOT of relatives. Also, before you eat you always have to drink "shto gram vodka" (100g Wodka, they measure it in gram for an unknown reason) as an appetizer. You need a very good liver if you want to visit the Ukraine. But then, they are very nice people.
