Is this what happens in Lutheran churches? Or is this just a Reformed practice? I'm sure it happens in many denominations.

It was originally invented by a Protestant in the 19th century, but the tradition was also taken over by the Catholic church. Advent and Christmas traditions are very similar in the Protestant and Catholic church in Germany.

In UBF, the Koreans did not care about decoration in the Advent time. If we had not cared for that ourselves, would not even had a cross or an Advent wreath when it was omnipresent in Germany at this time. You could see that it was Advent time in the shop decorations, but not in UBF. I think it was always very perplexing for new visitors to see that in UBF no church traditions were observed, the center was a kind of Korean enclave, a completely different monotonic world that was always the same. There was the smell of gingerbread everywhere around, but when you entered UBF, it smelled like Kemchee anyway.
