>As regards the social welfare benefits of Europe, its difficult to comment because most countries have a different system.
The British National Health System was introduced in 1948 and it provided free medical treatment for every body. It runs along side a private system so we have a dual system. One of the problems the National Health system caused is that of its phenominal success. Less babies are dying in childbirth. People are surviving illnesses that they used to die of, and the population is in general living longer. This means the Government is having to pay pensions for a lot longer than it used to do.
It is paid for by workers contributing 4% of their wages and employers 5%. With an increasing number of pensioners, there are economic problems. These are paid for by people who earn above a certain income having to make a contribution to certain like things dental charges and eye tests, etc and the cost of medicine. These things used to be free. The government is also giving financial incentives for people to take out private medical insurance, so lessening State medical costs.
So which system is the best ours or yours. The answer I think would be to look at certain statistics like comparisoms of infant mortality, life expectancy, number of hospital beds, doctors and nurses per thousand of the population. I am ignorant of these statistics so I dont know the answer.
I remember reading ten years ago during Hilary Clintons campaign to give America a National Health service that 75% of Americans wanted one, but the power of the health lobby who would be the losers was so strong that it never happened.
