Sounds cynical and strange to somebody who never has been in a cult. For me it's not so extreme, because I had a life before the cult, but maybe I have some similar problems too. I am 5 years married now, but I never had been on holidays alone with my wife so far. Why do cults fear members taking holidays so much? I think it is because they cannot allow members to get some "distance" from the cult. Cult mind control requires that you have to regularly take part in cult activities (you never could drop the Bible study or Sundays service for only one week). Idle time and a non-cult-environment will open your mind and eyes very quickly. Cult mind control requires that you never think and reflect deeply about what you are doing. Vacations are a great time to meditate about your life, past and future. But cults don't want you to think. They keep your brain or parts of it in a semi-paralyzed state. I remember that always when there was a public holiday, and particularly in the time of Christmas and New Year, our UBF chapter leader scheduled many extra meetings in the UBF center. He never allowed for any "donwtime," you were always kept busy. Now I understand this is an essential part of cult mind control. The main concern of cult leaders is to keep their members busy with whatsoever activity (see also my postig here).
