Subject: the rest of the harvey mackay column, part II

Here is part II of Harvey's column. I includes part that was not picked up by the Minneapolis newspaper. It made my spirit soar even higher. I hope you like it and will encourage your newspaper to seek out the Harvey Mackay column called Swimming With Sharks.

(And by the way, Harvey has a good heart. I sent him a message thanking him for letting me copy his column her. I explained that I was going to retype it because my functioning computer has no word processing software active right now. He sent it to me by email (after a frustrated me had try to type it in twice only to lose it). Harvey, in my book, is pretty danged cool.

Susan B. Anthony was both a revered and despised American political figure. In the late 1800s she crusaded for a woman’s right to vote, a law that was not enacted until several years after her death. Women have only been able to vote in this country since 1920. At that time, the majority opinion was that women shouldn’t vote and were not the equal of men. Anyone trying to change the status quo was considered a troublemaker. Still, Anthony soldiered on and eventually earned a following.

Today, women business owners employ more people than all the Fortune 500 companies combined.

Again, one person. Sure, Susan B. Anthony had plenty of followers. But she was the leader who inspired, motivated and refused to give up – the one person who made all the difference.

A poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.”

He said, “Then I thank you from my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith was stronger also. He had been ready to give up and quit. Many years later that same woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Dressed in his doctor’s gown, he went to her room to see her and recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life, and gave special attention to her case. After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge, and the bill was sent to her room. She was afraid to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay it. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words … “Paid in full with one glass of milk.” Signed, Dr. Howard Kelly.

A chance meeting, to be sure. But I believe strongly that we are often put in a certain place at a certain time for a reason, and it is often our chance to make a difference. Whether it’s your work life or personal life, I encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity. You may not go down in the history books, but you will have made your corner of the world a better place.

Mackay’s Moral: One person can make all the difference in the world.
