Subject: games get them reading

Those Summer Olympic Games being held in Athens are a great way to encourage struggling readers to pick up a newspaper. Have your students discuss as a group the sports they have watched on television so far. Many will have seen basketball, soccer or swimming so far. Great! Now pass out a few newspapers and have them search the sports sections to see stories about the sports they have seen so far. If not entire stories, they should be able find find scoring summaries in small type -- known in the newspaper industry as agate type. After letting them browse the newspaper for a few minutes have them discuss as a group the most interesting things they read about the Summer Games. This would work will with students in grades 5-9.
