"Malibu Pier Re-Opened"

Yes, the Malibu pier has finally re-opened. Met up with Catfish(Tom) at around 1:00. Tom had arrived at noon telling me that the water was quite murky due to the red tide. However when I had arrived, the water was beginning to clear. We fished the middle of the pier and found plenty of pin-head sized anchovies schooling around and under the pier. Unfortunately, in my absent mindedness, I forgot to bring my bait reel and was left with only my conventional setup. While I fumbled around with the heavier outfit, Catfish proceded to catch 5 short butts with his light 6lb spinning outfit within a three hour time span. He used a variety of techniques but most came on a 3" bighammer swimbait. 1 legal halibutt was brought up by the guy situated to the left of where we were fishing. I have to say, the halibut seemed to be all over the place chasing the chovies as we witnessed at least 3 butts coming completely out of the water to feed on the bait. Tom was nice enough to lend me his pole as he decided to get some food. With his pole, I managed to land 3 short butts within an hour or so on the bighammer swimbait. Besides the hali's there were intermitent bites of mackeral, large queenfish, and grey smoothhound sharks. Overall an excellent day at the pier.
Tight Lines!
