Zeni,
You need to trust your judgement, and your vote to Long Hair was important and definitely will has big impact on Hong Kong's political ecology.
People has their own different life experiences and thus has their views based on their own perception. On a more ordinary level (I won't say it is low level), people will only considered their own immediate benefit. It is nature of human being as an individual with surival instinct.
This is why you have met a lot of Chinese people they think that "Chinese Communist Party (indeed, they are only psedo Marcist)" has been doing a good job for the Chinese. People tend to forget about history and being lazy to think deep and question about the ridiculus of the system. Only when come to the point of almost distinction, SOME poeple will wake up and start to find a way out.
The whistler's mission is to wake people up from their distinction, rather than fighting against those would be victims.
Many people still confused about the civilization, the culture, the state, the govenment and the authority.
It is not a simple task to have people wake up in one day.

Regards!
