Hello NC Cinderella
We’re at that point of American Idol (I can only imagine how many of you are fans) where specific choices make the biggest impact. It’s less about the shoes, the hair, the dress, etc., and more about, what the remaining singers are bringing to their performance? (For you this includes interview, onstage introduction, and modeling) What YOU bring is where the bulk of one’s concentration should be. That is why I’m always trying to introduce you to ideas and concepts that are different from what most people concentrate on, most of the time.
Paula, Randy, Kara, and Simon speak about “knowing who you are,” and, although they will sometimes comment on what the singer is wearing and the hairstyles, I don’t think knowing who you are starts with the dress or the shoes, or the make up, or the hair. Those are finishing touches. Yet, so many place the majority of their focus on the outside, trying to make themselves what they “think” they need to be in order to get the judges’ attention. Very often people think that changing the outside will do just this.
When I speak with participants and parents alike, conversations inevitably get around to changing a dress, a song or dance, hairstyle, or introduction. This often is based on what someone else told them or what has been successful for other participants in the past. In this process of changing the outside over and over again to try and conform to what we “think” will succeed with the judges, we believe we are moving forward. In reality, we are most often staying in exactly the same place, instead of making the internal changes that must take place to grow as a person. With this personal growth, you will shed a lot of the ideas about what you think is right in order to “win” and allow who you are to emanate. Who are YOU? What do YOU bring to the pageant? YOU are the only thing that is unique on that stage. Sure, you can argue that a one-of-a-kind dress or an original song will be unique, but they will only be unique for the moment. You will be unique forever.
So, what do you want to bring to the party, so to speak? Take the time to look at things differently, consider the many options that exist in almost every situation, and see how are you best able to add your special touch.
Whether you get it from a book, a coach, or by some time spent alone analyzing what you want and how you want to get there, a change from the inside can make things on the outside look so very different.
As always, I wish you much success. If I can be of any help in your preparations, don’t hesitate to contact me. It would be a pleasure.
