Gloria,

There are many things you can try although usually trapping is the best method. Whatever you do, DO NOT put mothballs and ammonia in the attic or soffits. These chemicals contain a respiratory irritant that can cause health hazards to the occupants of the home. You can try opening the attic hatch every day and letting the squirrels know your there. You can also try leaving an attic light on. These methods will usually fail, however, they are free. I would advise against purchasing any type of electronic device or strobe light as these methods will not work and you will be out several hundred dollars.

Depending on where you live and the climate at this time of year, most squirrels are not willing to give up their home in the cold weather. Trapping the established squirrels and perfoming an exclusion and some damage prevention will offer the best chance of keeping squirrels out.

Solution -

Contact a Licensed Nuisance Wildlife Control Technician. Have them perform a complete inspection of the home, noting any holes, rotten wood, gaps, attic fan and vent screen damage. Once the Technician has trapped all of the squirrels, they can exclude future squirrels by making necessary repairs to the home. Once the squirrels are out, trees should be trimmed back so that new squirrels can't jump on the roof.

Good Luck,
