First, we cannot assume that the hole under the porch is from the woodchuck unless you actually seen it going in or out of the hole. Many animals can burrow under the porch.

If it is a woodchuck burrowing under the porch, you should check with your state conservation department prior to trapping it yourself. Some states require a permit to trap nuisance wildlife. The other option is to hire a licensed trapper to alleviate the problem. After the burrowing animals are removed, cover the hole with dirt and let it set for 3 to 5 days and if no holes open up, you can exclude further animals using 1/2 inch hardware cloth. Dig down and out 1 foot and then bend the hardware cloth in an L shape and bury it around the porch.
