From the information you provided, it sounds like birds or squirrels may be doing this. Whenever an animal is digging, there is usually an underlying problem. I would advise having the lawn treated for grub worms. This can be purchased at any local discount store such as Walmart. Nurseries and hardware stores also carry the treatment for grubs. You can also hire a lawn care professional to apply the treatment.

Depending on what type of trees you have in the yard, nuts or berries could be falling to the ground which usually end up just under the surface. Either way, the grub treatment is always a good idea. When mowing, try bagging the grass. This will help eliminate any nuts or berries that fall from the trees.
