The deal with weights is that you will if:
1) you do more exercises with a low weight (like 5 lbs) you will not gain a lot (no more than 3 lbs) and you will tone your muscle
2) you do less exercises with a heavy weight (just to see how far you can go, like body builders do) you will gain more and on top of toning you will create a big muscle (also like body builders have)

What you should probably do is more repetative exercises with the low weight and you will just gain a little muscle weight, your metabolism will work faster and you will get that pretty toned body.
