Mancow might leave Windy City for Frisco

July 17, 2001
BY ROBERT FEDER SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

Back on the air Monday after a two-week vacation, Mancow Muller returned to his WKQX-FM (101.1) morning show amid speculation that he might be leaving
Chicago for good.

Muller, whose $3-million-a-year contract is up later this month, is under pressure from parent company Emmis Communications to continue at Q-101, where the
shock jock has been the alternative rock station's franchise since 1998.

While talks are continuing with Emmis, Muller and his agent, Robert Eatman, reportedly are weighing an offer from Infinity Broadcasting that would move
''Mancow's Morning Madhouse'' to an Infinity station in San Francisco. Muller was a hit at the former KYLD-FM and KSOL-FM in San Francisco before he moved
to Chicago to launch the former WRCX in 1994.

Infinity's offer reportedly calls for a major expansion of Muller's show in syndication. In Chicago, it would air middays on Infinity's WCKG-FM (105.9)--between
Howard Stern in mornings and Steve Dahl in afternoons. Buzz Kilman and Wendy Snyder recently signed one-year deals to continue hosting middays at WCKG,
but station bosses have met privately with Muller.

While he declined to confirm details of the offer, Muller said he would have ''no problem'' sharing a frequency with rival Stern.

''We're both on an Infinity station [in syndication] that's very successful in Detroit right now,'' he said. ''As long as I don't have to go on and sing the guy's praises, I'm
OK with that,'' he said.

A key figure behind the scenes in trying to bring Muller into the company's growing stable of talent is John Gehron, Chicago-based senior vice president of Infinity.

''John Gehron is the last honest radio man in Chicago,'' Muller said. ''I wish you'd quote me on that.''
