Cicero chief sues radio host over remarks

Published November 28, 2001

CHICAGO -- Cicero Town President Betty Loren-Maltese filed a defamation lawsuit Tuesday against Matthew "Mancow" Muller for remarks he
made on
his radio show, including allegations that she accepted payoffs to do town business and associated with mobsters.

The lawsuit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, contends that Muller's statements during his June 18 broadcast on WKQX-FM 101.1 were
knowingly false and caused Loren-Maltese to suffer "injury to her
reputation, humiliation, embarrassment and mental anguish."

The suit, which seeks damages in excess of $50,000, also names Emmis Communications, which owns Q101, for hiring Muller even though he has
made other disparaging remarks about her in the past.

Loren-Maltese, who has been indicted on racketeering charges, will go on trial in May for
allegedly taking bribes to allow a mob-controlled
insurance administrator to loot the town of more
than $10 million.
