1.<<送徐無黨南歸序>>的論說對象是徐無黨,自己和當時把立德,立功和立言重要次序錯了的文人。
而文章要說的理論是聖賢精神不滅是因為立德,立功,立言。而當中立德最重要,立言最不可靠。作者認為今之學者沉醉於文詞中,是不要得的,要注重品德。

而<<師說>>的對象是恥於從師的「今之眾人」。
作者要說的道理是人非生而知之,個個都需要從師,從師時要小心選擇老師,要找教授大學問的老師,而且不要計較年齡和富貴,「道之所存,師之所存」,所以人必有師,人皆可為師。

2.<<東門行>>一詩借主人公不甘貧窮而出門鋌而走險一事來暗示當時社會「富者田連千百,貧者無立錐之地」的階級差異,貧者唯有鋌而走險。
<<賣炭翁>>一詩則借賣炭翁辛勤伐薪燒炭卻被宮使強搶而說出當時宮使對百姓百般削榨,朝政的黑暗。
