It's called playing to the lowest common denominator. Not to insult fans of "Hunter," but traditionally, well written, thoughtful, intelligent shows don't pick up the ratings. Look at the long-running success of "Three's Company," a brainless jiggle-fest, and then compare to the abbreviated run of "Once and Again," a mature, well scripted series. It's the same reason reality TV is on a roll--no effort involved to watch.
