] Date Posted: 10:17:22 01/10/05 Mon Great Beginnings By Dan Beaver, Editor January 5, 2005 12:00 PM ET Kahne was the runaway winner of rookie honors. Kasey Kahne entered the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway with a chance to tie Ryan Newman's record for the most top-fives by a NASCAR Cup rookie. When Newman posted 14 in 2002, he broke Tony Stewart's three-year-old record. Kahne came up one race short. The similarity between Newman and Kahne is striking. Both shy performers have been great in qualifying: Newman earned six poles in his rookie season compared to Kahne's five. Both drivers earned a lot of runner-up finishes in their freshman seasons: Newman had six to Kahne's five. Under Ray Evernham's tutelage, victories will come quickly. Another of Ray's rookies went winless in his first season, but Jeff Gordon went on to win 69 times in the ensuing years. Kahne has that same unflappable driving style. Equally important for the fantasy owner is the fact that Kahne is remarkably predictable. Seven of Kahne's 13 top-fives came on the intermediate speedways measuring. Since these tracks dominate the 2005 schedule, Kahne will be a driver that will pay dividends throughout the year. Where Kahne will break into victory is anyone's guess. His five runner-up finishes have come on the two-mile super-smooth speedways of Michigan and Fontana, the high-torque 1.5-milers of Texas and Las Vegas and on the rough pavement of Rockingham. He was also moving toward victory on the concrete canyons of Dover before he slipped in another driver's oil. This preview—plus 39 others—can be found in the Fantasy Racing 2005 Guide on newsstands everywhere later this month. **Had to share this one. I can't wait for the season to begin!!! I'm ready to see Kasey win a Cup race! Melissa Texas [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
