以壇經為六祖核心思想看是不能全面理解後世禪宗思想的發展。
從王維這篇銘文反而提供了更多訊息。
壇經的中心思想若分析為有:
佛之自性化,佛之世間化。
一是可以見性成佛,二是無相為体,無住為本,無念為宗。
眾生是佛,一念頓悟、從自心中頓見真如本性。
再提出無相戒,定慧般若不二法門等修持。

而王維先多提了一個忍字。
"乃教人以忍,曰:“忍者,無生方得,無我始成。於初發心,以爲教首。"

"至於定無所入,慧無所依,大身過於十方,本覺超於三世。"
覺悟主体並非在小我的自身中,提出有大身超十方三世。世間一切塵根不用滅亦等同大身性海。
定慧可以是植德之本,卻不是唯一入和依於去覺悟。
"經行宴息,皆在正受;談笑語言,曾無戲論。"
人生一切所為皆不離此大身本覺。

這些教理是王維通過神會對六祖教義的指引而寫出。而在日後的禪宗思想大致也是依這個方向而發展。
先克己對這個自我的節制。(忍)
再體現到這個小我是和宇宙本然同体同在,一切時空都正在超越小我的一切,如知解情執妄想生老病死等。(見性)
從而人生一切都在本然自在的性海中顯化,而無掛無礙。(在道中)
