That sounds like a good idea. I always have problems keeping them from shifting when i screw them in. I will try that!

Do you still measure antler to nose, etc? A friend of mine said he doesn't do that anymore, just test fits the cape to the antler burrs and goes with it. He doesn't seem to have any problems with the skin pulling away from the antler burrs.

I don't know about needing more salt though, I use quite a bit of salt, and i salt twice and let them dry hard. I think the cape might have just been old, he had it for nine days prior to bringing it to me.
