SDLP murder shock
Sunday, March 18, 2007

By Stephen Breen

The SDLP was rocked last night by claims that one of its senior members carried out a brutal Troubles murder.

'Cold case' cops were urged to quiz the politician following allegations by murder-victim Eoin Devine's family that the leading party figure committed the savage 1973 slaying.

Graffiti has also appeared on gable walls accusing the well-known politician of involvement in the murder of Mr Devine (24), from west Belfast, who bled to death after being shot in the back.

When Sunday Life approached the senior SDLP member yesterday, the politician replied: "I will sue anyone who tries to say I'm a killer."

The party has been rocked by the graffiti, which read: 'SDLP murderer ***** *****. What About O Devine?'

SDLP deputy leader Alasdair McDonnell (right), who is not the member identified in the graffiti, said: "I imagine the person who was named would take legal action if they discovered who was responsible."

Robbie Devine - whose brother, Eoin, was killed in 1973 - spoke out after graffiti appeared naming the SDLP member as the 24-year-old's killer.

The graffiti read: 'SDLP murderer ***** *****. What About O Devine?'

When contacted by Sunday Life yesterday, the senior SDLP figure said: " I will sue anyone who tries to say I am a killer.

"If anybody has any information on any killing, they should go to the PSNI."

The party's deputy leader, Alasdair McDonnell, who is not the member named in the graffiti, said: "I was made aware of the graffiti, but I don't know anything about this case.

"I imagine the person who was named would take legal action if they discovered who was responsible for the graffiti."

Mr Devine told Sunday Life that he believes the SDLP member named in the graffiti was responsible for his brother's death.

He said: "We think this graffiti is the truth and I'm not surprised this person has been named.

"This person should be quizzed by police about the killing.

"After all these years, we still want justice for my brother and we are willing to speak to the (PSNI) Historical Enquiries Team about this.

"I think Eoin's killers were trying to scare him by using an M1 carbine, but he was a totally innocent victim.

"Eoin promised that he didn't do anything and our family should not have had to bury him on his birthday.

"Whoever did this should be brought before the courts."

The graffiti was daubed last Wednesday morning, but was later removed.

Eoin Devine, a single man, was shot dead on August 25, 1973.

He had been kidnapped and was found dying from gunshot wounds at a house in McClure Street, off Belfast's Ormeau Road.

Mr Devine, from Distillery Street, in the west of the city, had been accused of stealing the keys to a public house. His family have always protested his innocence.

It is believed he was interrogated before being shot twice in the buttocks.
