EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Jason Holsinger and Victor Gomez have one month of Division I basketball experience, but the two Purple Aces played beyond their years Saturday night.
Holsinger, a freshman guard, scored a game-high 18 points and Gomez, a sophomore forward and junior college transfer, added 12 to give Evansville a 75-69 victory over Purdue in front of 11,726 fans at Evansville's Roberts Stadium.
The victory was UE's first over a Big Ten team since a 1999 win against Northwestern, and improved Evansville's record to 2-2 going into Tuesday's game at Western Kentucky. The Boilermakers are now 2-3.
"We need to make sure this game was not the highlight of our season," said Aces' coach Steve Merfeld, "but rather, the springboard to future success."
Evansville built a 50-36 second half lead, only to have Purdue cut the advantage to one at 61-60. Evansville never allowed the Boilers to get closer, even though it was still a two-point game with 15 seconds remaining before Holsinger put the game on ice with four straight free throws.
"We knew Purdue would make a run on us; that wasn't unexpected," Holsinger said. "When they did, we made the plays we needed to make. In fact, we made a run of our own and that was really important. Plus, the crowd was great. They gave us energy at a time when we really needed it."
Holsinger was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line to go along with 4-for-9 shooting from the field. Gomez hit five of his seven shots, including two of three from three-point range. Bradley Strickland and Kyle Anslinger added nine points each to UE's balanced attack, and Matt Webster scored eight.
Freshman guard Chris Lutz led the Boilermakers with 14, and Matt Kiefer and Nate Minnoy scored 12. The game was a homecoming for Kiefer, a senior and a graduate of Evansville Mater Dei High School.
The crowd of 11,726 was the second largest in the last 10 years for the Purple Aces.
The Aces face a tough test Tuesday night as they travel to Bowling Green Kentucky to face the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.
