HOUSTON -- All one Houston family wants this holiday season is memories. The Scalises are new in town, but they've already met some of the worst Houston has to offer. Now, they're hoping for the kind of thing that probably only seems possible this time of year -- that thieves might return just a little of what they stole.
KHOU
The thieves stole dozens of family photos including many of 2-year-old Francesca.
Christmas will be in a motel this year for Erminio Scalise and his daughter Maria. His wife and 2-year-old daughter Francesca are in Europe.
The family had just moved to Houston from California when they hit a run of bad luck.
They came here so that the wife, Dana Scalise, could do a dental residency. But, she was called back to Romania because her father has cancer.
And the family was supposed to have a home by now, but the deal on the house fell through.
Sunday morning, it got worse.
Maria was walking Googie when she discovered the trailer loaded with most of their belongings had been burglarized.
"The trailer was parked right back here in the corner," Maria explained.
Not even a shadow of belongings was left. The family doesn't care about the furniture -- just the photos.
"I don't care about the rest -- just our memories. And I want, you know, I want it to be for Christmas," Maria said. "I don't want my mom to be upset. I don't, you know, I want us to be happy."
Also in the trailer were little Francesca's trophies and crowns from more than 50 pageants.
Erminio Scalise says keep the stuff to sell. But he wants the pictures.
"They were most of my babies, my daughters, and we hard copies and also CD ROMs. You know, like I said, this is memories, going back 13 years," he explained.
Scalise is hoping the thieves will see the story and either call 11 News to tell us where to find the photos or write to him at: P.O. box 854, Spring, TX, 77388.
That would be the best present this Christmas.
