Ebony Knight's head lifted slowly as the two-legged creature took his charge into her arms. A deep tone moved through his pipes, a simple warning for her to take great care with the child. As she moved away, he fell into step beside her, blackened sides nearly touching her. He sensed her sincerity... but he had to wary. The maiden couldn't possibly comprehend what was at stake here.

The rain continued to fall. Lightning flashed in the distant. In the brilliant light, he observed a house and barn in the distance. A chill ran down the weary beast's backbone. As much as he wanted to rest, he never had a fondness for enclosed buildings. The thunder following the lightning woke the child. His wails filled the silence of the night. An ear atop the steed's crown swiveled his way. He tilted his head slightly so he could watch him.

They came to the barn at last. Ebony Knight faithfully followed the maiden inside, only because she held Roshaun. Once inside, the black beast moved so he faced woman and child. Steel-like muscles tightened beneath his onyx coat, his dark eyes daring her to look up at him. It was time to use his second gift. After all, what is warrior, what is a guard... without weapons to use to protect that he is protecting?

Maiden, speak thy name and intentions for the child you carry.

In her mind's cavern, the deep voice would ring out like thunder. The stallion's airways flamed. Warm air blew into the face of woman and child, for this how close the beast was. Watching her and waiting... the Ebony Knight remained strong.
