What a neat topic. I was almost afraid to say anything here (notice, almost! haha) I have been blessed with a magical childhood... the kind in the storybooks of the 50's with the stay at home mommy in brown curls and an apron, the worker bee adoring daddy who comes home from work and works some more, fabulous grandparents, and a life blessed with books and magic... then the reality of my adulthood and its relationships... very hard to recreate perfection in my later years. However, I love my life and my son (now grown) and I can safely say that any times I spent recreating recipes or decorating for holidays or surprising Daddy with something fun like a picnic... those are doubly more beautiful to remember. And my son (24) actually appreciates those things, although he doesn't do them himself. Well, the topic was childhood rituals, and I think one of the most special is to pack a picnic lunch (and it doesn't have to be fancy at all) and take it somewhere on a type of excursion. Even in winter and stay in the car... Our nearby town has a lake with huge geese that beg bites of sandwich at the car windows. We STILL love to take even our drive-through take-out there and share with them...
Or CHASING THE MOON:----- On full moon nights we would get in the car and drive through the countryside, ending up at some little soda machine in a nearby sleepy town to buy a Coke to go along with the package of crackers or cookies we had brought from home... Sometimes a bunch of grapes???? Alas, we are not as health concious as we could be... Anyway, We would try to get away from the lights of farm houses AND the cities and just look at the moon as it comes up... Beautiful. As a child, I always went to sleep, and so did my son, Gerred. Now sometimes he drives and guess who snoozes after the picnic! haha.. Also he is pickier about his car than I was... Not very happy when his "little" passenger spills... PAYBACK!!!
Sorry you guys are all ill, Alison. I hope things perk up for you soon. I have always wondered what Rarebit was, and it looks yummy! Thanks again for this beautiful website...
