Subject: 7 Rapid Weight Loss Tips (gdes-311)

Rapid weight loss happens when you burn fat and cleanse toxins out of your body. You can do that several ways. Here are a few of them.

1. Use of a cleanse. Did you know you have at least seven or eight pounds of waste stored in your body? A cleanse works by removing toxins and waste from your body. For the quickest weight loss consider liquid cleanses.

2. Eat more often, but eat smaller portions. This will help you body metabolize the meal and not have the excess amount of fat which a larger meal often does.

3. Eat more protein. This will help your metabolism and burn fat more quickly. It will also help you build muscle.

I don't believe enough forethought went into the petting zoo on Canada Day. Animals unaccustomed to being handled were set out on a busy street for 5 hours, in the midday sun, with little shelter or privacy. Only the geese had access to water. The chicks all huddled in the back of their wire cage, as far as they could get from the wide open door; to me this made clear they did not wish to be picked up by children. There was no attendant nearby.

Perhaps next year we could invite the Humane Society out, and show domesticated animals, in the lobby, indoors?

Well, here I am, fresh back from the Town Hall meeting, and if even half the ideas proposed come to fruition, we'll be in good shape.

I committed to lending my skills to the communications and promotions front. On that note, I think it's important to start touting upcoming programming asap.

One thing I thought might be viable would be to apply The Jenny Revue to both promoting and talking about events and issues at the Gas Station Theatre.

The Jenny Revue is a publication which was created in the early days of The Winnipeg Fringe Festival for the purpose of promoting all the artists at the Fringe during a time when the main stream media paid attention only to those productions that came from out of town. Beginning as 4 pages of text and cartoons, The Jenny evolved into an multi issue, 8-12 page half-tab with photos and ads accompanying the Buzz, Shameless Self Promotions, and letters, becoming a free forum for both Fringe participants and their audience. 2004 marked our 13th year at the Fringe, so it is a name and a format with which many local, national and international theatre, dance, and improv/comedy companies are familiar. It also has its own website.

The Jenny Revue was also used as promotional tool for Venue VIII in the early 90's. We produced a monthly paper with feature articles on upcoming productions and fund raisers at the venue, along with comments, reviews, etc., from anyone who cared to contribute. In those days, we had no advertising base and the distribution was strictly in house.

I propose that we could do something similar with the GST. I have talked to various of the Jenny staff and contributors who were enthusiastic. I'm sure they could be counted upon to generate some content in terms of interviews and features of upcoming events, along with, of course, promotional materials from the producing companies, and imput from OVCC members and event goers.
We could put a box in the GST lobby to solicit comments, reviews, suggestions, etc., from those attending events at the theatre (giving them an added reason to hang around post-show, patronizing the bar). People can also email written contributions, photos, etc., either to me or through the web site.

The Jenny Revue is entirely advertising funded. Currently we do not have a base of advertisers in the Osborne Village, and would need some sort of help in getting some momentum going there.

Distribution could be to all OV businesses who would allow for the paper to be picked up by their customers, and to the Universities, RRCC, and to lobbies of those local apartment complexes who would allow us to leave copies in the lobby for their residents.

We also have connections to a print broker who can either target market a specific area (ie/ an issue with a feature on a new play by a Maples area theatre group could be targeted to the Maples area), or blanket market the paper. This is done by combining it with other home delivered publications (ie/ Free Press, Metro, Flyer delivery).

We think the idea has merit, and is fraught with possibility. We have the experience, the expertise, and even the format and website in place. We would need some help in the ad sales and distribution areas, to get it going as a GST promotional vehicle and free forum.

It would allow us to raise the profile of the theatre and its programs, inform the public about scheduled events and allow for lots of imput from the community.

So there's the idea. Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Coral McKendrick

There really are very few theatre spaces of the GST's size with fixed, raked seating in Winnipeg. It makes it very fexible for theatre, dance, and live music. I think that after all of this effort to save the facility we should also strive to maintain the integrety of WHAT we are saving.

Of course this does not solve the financial woes of GST. Really, what is needed is a consortium of anchor tennants willing to commit to a certain number of weeks each year. The loss of rentals to Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers and Manitoba Theatre for Young People has been great, but surely there are other community based groups who need a good quality venue. Does anyone have contects with groups who may be interetsed? Even one week a year?

I have an idea to increase bookings at the GST. I am thinking of a series of ethnically diverse weekend cultural festivals featuring art and culture from various nations. We would make the series available to ethno-cultural organizations in Winnipeg. They would pay a base rental and tech rate, share part of the proceeds with GST and be responsible for the costs assoiciated with presenting their weekend.

This series differs from Folklorama in that we would present between late fall and early spring and avoid summer. As well, we would focus on one country per weekend and would include fine arts, contemporary art, classical art and original local creations as opposed to exclusively folk art and popular presentations. If organizations representing say, 5 different countries were interested, we could book up 5 slow weekends. GST could establish a standard Thurs-Sunday template such as:

Thursday: readings/lectures
Friday: films
Sat: performing arts
Sunday: children's progrmaming

Or whatever works.

GST could assist each group in planning and producing their event. We would draw audience from both the featured community and the community at large. The Folk Arts Council of Winnipeg could be approached to assist in the development, promotion and running of this series. The series could be run once a month, or in blocks. It could be booked first come, first serve or by lottery or it could be programmed by GST.

Many of Winnipeg's diverse communities have talented artists and performers. As well, many communities would be willing to bring in films, lecturers, artists and performers to share with the community at large. They just need an affordable place to do it.

Submitted for you consideration,

Gerry Atwell

In broad terms, there are two directions the theatre can begin to move in, and while these aren't totally incompatible, they nonetheless involve different development strategies. The first would be to try to find additional renters and build up the bookings to different cultural organizations. The second is to begin presenting or co-presenting productions. At first blush, there isn't an incompatibilty here, as new productions can be worked around the schedule of existing (and any new) renters, but this will tend to relegate the new presenting role to a "fill -in" or seasonal role, which may not give the presenting entity enough critical mass (resourses, audience) to become all it might be. Now, strictly from the standpoint of viability, it may be enough to get new organizations, such as the Fringe , Jazz Festival, etc. to start renting the theatre, thereby expanding the theatre's role as a roadhouse. This might turn the page on financial viability, since the decifit is small. But, is it enough from the standpoint of the community's need? On the other hand, I believe we have an obligation to the existing users to keep the facility available for their use, as they have been instrumental in saving the space and might have a problem finding another place. One of the things we need, and are in the processing of preparing, is more information on the present pattern of use, the revenue gained from this pattern, as well as data on how "full" the existing users get the theatre. If we promoted the theatre by preparing a monthly calendar, like the West End Cultural Centre, and gave it wide distribution to members and the community at large, couldn't we increase the audience of the groups we rent to, cross-pollinate the audience of our renters and own presentations, creating in effect a regular audience for whatever is going on at the theatre? This implies a significant gear-up for new presentations, but since we have the theatre, and since the marginal per-event cost of gearing it up is small, should we not give it a try?

I do not know for sure if there are any problems associated with this idea and it would need to be discussed with The University of Winnipeg Theatre Dept. My idea is to have a pass the hat for donations for the Gas Station Theatre at the University of Winnipeg Theatre Shows. I know from speaking to other theatre students that they wouldn't mind this and would gladly donate, especially if it would help the theatre. A great amount of funds might not necessarily be generated this way but some money is better then no money. So just a thought to pass by. Hope this helps!

Sincerely,

So, my question is: what is the relationship between the OVCC and the Comedy Festival? From what I have pieced together, the Comedy Festival is eligible for grant money because they are operating out of the OVCC and the OVCC is broke. But profit from the festival (if there is such a thing?) goes back into the festival. I guess I'm just wondering if it is as bad as it sounds.

Oh, and nice work so far! I think the whole community is grateful for the work of the new board.

My thanks to all hearty Winnipeg arts supporters who have worked to save the GST! Now it's time to imagine new possibilities and create. While working to book the theatre as fully as possible, we need to expand our thinking in terms of what can be done and then get doing! I believe, where the will exists, anything can be manifest. It's us to us.

Is it possible to begin to create the Gas Station Theatre as an ongoing presence in Osborne Village. A similar "icon" exists as the Westend Cultural Centre, but is it possible to find revenue-generating means for keeping the theatre open during the daytime as well as the evening? I don't know if the theatre is the only public space, but could the facility be rented out for meetings, training sessions, etc. This might require rennovation if smaller meeting rooms are not currently available. I wonder if the seating capacity, as it is,is still viable??
I think the current Board needs to agree on an inspiring vision of possiblity for GST, share that with the members and turn passion into business viability.

Welcome everybody to the OVCC/Gas Station Theatre Member Discussion Forum. We are really pleased to be able to provide this means for you to put forward your ideas, thoughts, criticisms, and general brilliance so we can make the theatre all that it can be!

I would like to personally thank Hugh Conacher for getting this up and running. This is the first of many methods we will employ to keep the membership involved and excited about the Gas Station Theatre.

OVCC has two really important brands we want to build on: the Gas Station Theatre and the Comedy Festival. We are really excited about all the potential that is emerging as we get on our feet.

Don't forget to come to the town hall meeting on the 24th of January. This will be an important milestone for us as we work towards putting a real business plan forward at the AGM in March.

For all those who have expressed their willingness to help and are wondering what we have been up to since the 14th - YOU HAVE NOT BEEN FORGOTTEN :) We will be calling on you if we haven't already! We have been busy, although mildly interrupted by those pesky holidays - getting up to speed with the current status of the organization and putting fundamentals in place - like dealing with NorthWest - I hope you have all had a mini celebration by now!

Peter Reimer is chairing our Program and Policy Committee (i.e. operations) and Ken Beeson is chairing the Finance Committee. If you have questions for them or any other member of the board we are at your service.

That's all for now. More to come.

All the best to you and yours!
James

Now that the sale of the Gas Station Theatre has been stopped... we need your help! If you are interested in the future of the Osbourne Village Cultural Centre and the Gas Station Theatre you are invited to a Town Hall at the Gas Station on January 24, 2005 at 7 PM.

Bring your ideas and questions so that we can use your feedback to help build the business plan that will be presented to the members at the AGM in March 2005.

Thanks,

Peter Reimer
VP OVCC Board
