Subject: The new Medical & Dental School Clinic at the Tagudin National High School

Date Posted: Mon, Dec 21 2009

In the early part of February 2008, Dr. and Mrs. Emilio Parpana Quines, Jr. (nee Dra. Felicima David) together with Atty. & Mrs. Erotido Valdez (nee Doris Parpana Quines) visited Tagudin National High School, alma mater of Dr. Quines and Mrs. Doris Q. Valdez. On this occasion, Mrs. Rosita L. Pascua, the school principal and the President of Tagudin High School Alumni Foundation (THSAFI) together with Engr.Manuel C. Parpana, Jr. and Mrs. Myra Parpana Paradero (School Nurse) requested Dr. and Mrs. Quines to donate a school clinic, like Atty. & Mrs. Erotido L. Valdez and General Diomedio L. Villanueva who donated two (2) classroom buildings.

Dr. & Mrs. Quines suggested that the Tagudin National High School Alumni Foundation, Inc. (THSAFI) should pass and forward a board resolution requesting to seek the assistance and support of UERM Medical Foundation of New York, USA.

On February 22, 2008, the Tagudin High School Alumni Foundation, Inc. (THSAFI) passed a resolution (Board Resolution # 1 S 2008) seeking the assistance and support of UERM Medical Foundation, Inc. of New York, USA for the realization of a medical school clinic building for the Tagudin National High School through its President Dra. Feicisima David Quines.

In the same year, Mrs. Rosita L. Pascua, President of THSAFI and the principal of the school together with Engr. Manuel C. Parpana, Jr. (THSAFI Adviser) forwarded the board resolution to Dra. Felicisima David Quines.

Dr. and Mrs. Emilio Parpana Quines, Jr. donated the amount of $659,007.90.

This year 2009 the school clinic building is already 100% complete. The air conditioner and other facilities of the clinic were donated by the Municipal Mayor of Tagudin, Honorable Roque S. Versoza, Jr.

MB Adm for the Tagudin Dep-Ed Teacher/Personnel Retirees Assoc.

Date Posted: Wed, Dec 16 2009

Message by the president, Angelita I. Parpana to the members of the Tagudin Dep-Ed Teacher-Personnel Retirees Assoc. at the event held in Cabulanglangan:

Our honored hosts for today’s occasion, Honorable SBP Jose Bunoan, Jr. and Honorable SBM Eliza Q. Bunoan who are always very supportive and accommodating to us, thank you so much Sir and Ma’am.

My colleagues here in the Tagudin Dep Ed Teachers Personnel Retirees Association and members from abroad especially my kumadre, Mrs. Manuela Valdez who was a very efficient treasurer of our association accompanied by her son, Larry, and other visitors, good morning.

On these days of rejoicing for the celebration of birth of Christ, let us find time and effort to give thanks to the Lord for the blessings we have received for the past years since our association was organized in July 6, 1998. We are now on our 11th year with ninety members. Pray and hope that with the continued cooperation of all our members, our objectives, visions and missions of our association will be realized which will bring progress and prosperity for all especially the people of Tagudin, our province of Ilocos Sur, and our country as a whole.

This Christmas, let us bear in mind the true spirit of the season that our real source of joy is not in receiving but in giving. It is not what we receive from others but what we give and do for the welfare and happiness of our fellow men that makes us truly happy.

Let us make this day of dedication of our thoughts and efforts to the task of bringing about a better life for all. Let this be our Christmas gift to the nation. Let us continue our sacrifices and cooperation so that our present aspirations for prosperity and plenty will soon materialize and so that the coming year 2010 might be more fruitful than the previous years. We should always remember that whatever reason we may have for rejoicing, we owe it to our almighty God. He gave us perseverance for all our sacrifices in the past to attain our present mission of progress.

Last year 2008 and this year 2009 are years of sacrifices on our part due to the global financial crisis. We may have passed through moments of inconveniences and difficulties but they were essential stepping stones to the progress and prosperity of our association and our fellow men.
As we face the year 2010, let us have an attitude of confidence and hope that we will overcome whatever difficulties and trials we will encounter. Our sweet and toil today will contribute something to our country’s goal of development and growth in the near future, thus bringing and better quality of life for all our people especially the youth for they are the hope of our fatherland.
Lastly, I am extending to you and your loved ones a blessed Christmas and a happy prosperous new year.

May God bless us all.

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and
height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay 'them'

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening,
whatever. Never let the brain idle. 'An idle mind is the devil's workshop.'

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only
person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves.
Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love , whether it's family,
pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever.
Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable,
improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next
county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every
opportunity.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER :
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the
moments that take our breath away.

We all need to live life to its fullest each day!!

Worry about nothing, pray about everything!!

Due to the urgency of the situation, we have decided to send our donation to Arthur via bank-to-bank transfer BPI. The processing was quick and easy with only $7.00 fee. For those of you who would prefer to send your contribution the same way, you might want to call BPI first to make sure that the addresses listed in your areas still exist. Two offices in different locations in Milpitas, California still show up in the bank’s website when these are no longer valid.

Lorna and Cris – could you please provide Arthur’s contact information other than his cell phone? What batch is he? Have you had any communication with him or his family lately? How is he doing?

Thank you.

Two blind pilots were both wearing dark glasses. One is using a guide
dog and the other is tapping his way along the aisle with a cane.
Nervous laughter spreads through the cabin, but the men enter the
cockpit, the door closes and the engines start up. The passengers begin
glancing nervously around, searching for some sign that this is just a
little practical joke. None is forthcoming. The plane moves faster and
faster down the runway and the people sitting in the window seats
realize they're headed straight for the water at the edge of the
airport. As it begins to look as though the plane will plough into the
water, panicked screams fill the cabin. At that moment, the plane lifts
smoothly into the air. The passengers relax and laugh a little
sheepishly and soon all retreat into their magazines, secure in the
knowledge that the plane is in good hands. In the cockpit, one of the
blind pilots turns to the other and says, "Ya know, Bob, one of these
days, they're gonna scream too late and we're all gonna die."

They Walk Among Us!
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Some guy bought a new fridge for his house.
To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front yard and hung a
sign on it saying: 'Free to good home. You want it, you take it.'
For three days the fridge sat there without anyone looking twice.
He eventually decided that people were too mistrustful of this deal.
So he changed the sign to read: 'Fridge for sale $50.'

The next day someone stole it!

They walk amongst us!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

One day I was walking down the beach with
some friends when someone shouted....
'Look at that dead bird!'
Someone looked up at the sky and said...'where?'

They walk among us!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
While looking at a house, my brother asked the
estate agent which direction was north because
he didn't want the sun waking him up every morning.
She asked, 'Does the sun rise in the north?'
My brother explained that the sun rises in the east
and has for sometime. She shook her head and said,
'Oh, I don't keep up with all that stuff.....'

They Walk Among Us!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My colleague and I were eating our lunch in our cafeteria,
when we overheard an admin girl talking about the
sunburn she got on her weekend drive to the beach.
She drove down in a convertible, but said
she 'didn't think she'd get sunburned
because the car was moving'.

They Walk Among Us!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car
which is designed to cut through a seat belt
if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the car boot.

They Walk Among Us!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was hanging out with a friend when we saw a woman
with a nose ring attached to an earring by a chain.
My friend said, 'Ouch! The chain must rip
out every time she turns her head!"
I had to explain that a person's nose and ear
remain the same distance apart no
matter which way the head is turned...

They Walk Among Us !
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I couldn't find my luggage at the airport baggage area and.
went to the lost luggage office and reported the loss.
The woman there smiled and told me not to worry
because she was a trained professional and
said I was in good hands. 'Now,' she asked me,
'Has your plane arrived yet?'....
(I work with professionals like this.)

They Walk Among Us!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While working at a pizza parlour I observed a man
ordering a small pizza to go. He appeared to be alone and
the cook asked him if he would like it cut
into 4 pieces or 6. He thought about it for some time
then said 'Just cut it into 4 pieces; I don't think I'm hungry
enough to eat 6 pieces.

They Walk Among Us!

Sadly, not only do they walk among us, they also reproduce !

Subject: 12 Days of Christmas -

Author:
Tutuwaki - Jardin
[Edit]

This is nice to share with.
12 Days of Christmas--Defined
There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me. What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won't come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas?
Today, I found out. From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not
permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality, which the children could remember.
The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.
Two turtledoves were the Old and New Testaments
Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.
The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.
The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first 5 books of the Old Test
The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation..
Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit:
Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.
The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.
Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace,
Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.
The ten lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments.
The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in The
Apostles' Creed.

So there is your history for today. This knowledge was shared with me and I found it interesting and enlightening and now I know how that strange song became a Christmas Carol...

Date Posted: Sat, Dec 05 2009

this is the 2nd plea for help for arthur narcisa. early this morning, 1:41AM to be exact, i received a text message from arthur narcisa... message reads: "today po is one of my saddest day. nararamdaman ko na naman ang hirap na dulot nitong sakit ko. pati magulang ko ay helpless na talaga. kaninang umaga nagulam lang kami ng noodles, til dinner, noodles and ulam namin dahil wala na nga talaga" (today is one of my saddest days. i can feel the pain brought about by my sickness. even my parents are helpless. this morning, our viand is only noodles, until dinner. we really have nothing left..)

arthur needs dialysis twice a week but even these two are not possible anymore since the help he gets from the medical funds of cong eric singson and from the PCSO are drained already... it has been three weeks since he did not have any dialysis... thus the pain he is experiencing right now...

the fund raising for arthur in SASAi is ongoing and sadly it is only able to raise a minimal amount... it is being readied to be sent to him through one of the local officers, fred somera.... this is only enough for a few weeks of dialysis...

i am now asking help from kindhearted souls like the followers of TAGUDINSEASIDE which i acknowledge to have a wider following... PLEASE HELP...

he has a kidney donor but the operation and post operation needs according to my officemate, whose father underwent an operation, needed 1M for that... i will not even want to go into that because it seems not doable...

i think arthur is from laud... either magsaysay or quirino... please check on the thread that lorna labitoria-alay-ay earlier created created here. i feel helpless reading his messages... but i can help by raising concerns thru this site...

PLEASE COURSE ANY CONTRIBUTION TO THE SASAi... c/o SASAi treasurer

Elizabeth Fajardo
9607 Marlive Ln # 02
Houston, Texas 77025

or direct to the savings account of arthur:

ARTHUR L. NARCISA
BPI EXPRESS Vigan Branch
account number: 1486-0721-16

arthur can't just leave house as it is painful to go even to an internet shop so he can be reached at his cellphone: 639214192978

again PLEASE HELP

(thanks larry, as always)

Ay naku, ang sarap balik-balikan ng kahapon sa Pinas. Hindi pa uso nuon ang mga tulisan sa gobierno. Halina’t balikan ang buhay pinoy………

Noong araw. . . .

Panciteria Moderna was the place to go for pancit miki and miki bihon already wrapped in their version of 'tetra pak' (banana leaves on wrapping paper tied with a rubber band). Pancit bihon was the specialty of Panciteria Wa Nam .. Kung gusto mo naman ng chopsuey rice doon ka sa Hen Wah, tabi ng Avenue Theatre.

At sa Ma Mon Luk, siopao was at 30 centavos; mami was at 70 centavos or 2 pcs. of siomai (large) with unlimited soup for 30 centavos.. So with one peso busog ka na. Ngayon bigay mo piso sa pulubi, titignan ka pa ng masama.

The Shangri-la in the basement of Shelborne Hotel (at the back) was the place to go for dates if you wanted a dark and cozy atmosphere. The Black Angel along Shaw Blvd near the corner of Kalentong in Mandaluyong was a very good place to listen to soft music (Fleetwoods, Lettermen, Cascades) and the lights were also quite low..

Then with the introduction of the 'black light' you look like Dracula about to devour a beautiful victim. Kaya lang pag may pustiso ka itim ang labas kaya mukhang kenkoy ka. So do not dare to smile..

With Php 30.00- 50.00 in your pocket you were in pretty good shape for a date.

'Bakuran' was the in-thing at parties with 'screening' from a friend to assist you in getting a dance with a girl who was very sought after.

Wack-Wack, the Sky Room in Jai-Alai, the penthouse at the Rufino Bldg. as well as Capri at the Sarmiento Bldg right opposite it were the favorite places for proms and balls. Sikat ang event if the Dyna Souls (dubbed the Beatles of the Philippines ), The Tilt Down Men (the Sotto brothers, Ti to, & Val, favored the Dave Clark 5), Hi-Jacks, the Electromaniacs (later Electros) or the Bad Habits was the 'combo' playing.

Other popular bands then were the Bits and Pieces ( after the Dave Clark 5 hit), Purple People, Versatiles (remember the late Bobby Lim), Technicolors (whose drummer Tony Tuviera is now the producer of Eat Bulaga), Red Fox (forerunner of Hotdog), Jungle Cats, Glenmores, Robins, Crystals , Phantoms, and the Downbeats (where most of the Juan de la Cruz band came from notably Pepe Smith or Joey Smith then)..

What about gate crashing a 'Tipar' (for party) and the ensuing rumble between feuding barkadas: Havocs, Combat, Axis, Amboys, Mobs & Exotics, meron pang kanya-kanyang busina (car honking ID)...

Remember BMI (Baguio Military Institute)? That school was a dumping ground for kicked out students from Manila and kids that needed discipline. Let’s not forget ang mga taga 'Baste' (San Sebastian) Ang daming siga noong araw.

Alta Vista along Roxas Blvd. was the favorite place for wedding receptions at Php 8.50 per cover! Ngayon, kulang pang pambayad ito sa parking fee.

Special ringside seats for performances at the Araneta Coliseum were at P5.00 per. So with P20.00 you could safely invite someone and still have enough for a snack afterwards or a game of 'putt and putt' at the mini-golf place located at the back of Araneta. Among the more popular celebrities who performed at the Big Dome were Neil Sedaka, Anita Bryant, Teddy Randazzo, Nat King Cole, Jo Ann Campbell, Paul Anka, Johnny Mathis (dito yata nag-umpisa ang pagiging fan ni Bebe sa kanya na dala dala hanggang ngayon), Matt Monro, Gary Lewis & the Playboys, Dave Clark 5, Zombies, Peter and Gordon and many many more.

Cruz, Blumentritt, Tayuman, Espiritu Santo Church , Grace Park, Pasay-Taft, Dakota - Harrison, Paco-Taft, Sta. Ana Tulay at BBB-Monumento ang mga sikat na lugar. Did you get an opportunity to ride the G-Liner from San Juan to Quiapo? It would crawl up to the corner of N.. Doming to pick up passengers. That's why we called it Gapang Liner.

Gas was very cheap then and they can afford to keep the motor running for 2 hours at a snail's pace. Gasoline prices then were at 25 centavos per liter and there were only two types of gas; Premium or Regular.. Caltex called their premium 'Boron' as advertised by that multi-colored dancing lights on top of the old San Miguel Ice Plant. Near those dancing lights was the big white kettle pouring hot chocolate on a giant cup. It was sponsored by Cocoa Ricoa. Esso named theirs Extra to 'put a Tiger in your tank'.

Yung Good Earth Emporium pwede ring idagdag sa mga magagandang shopping mall noong araw. Yung Manila Grand Opera house, Clover, Odeon, Roxan, Hollywood , Cinerama, Avenue, Universal, Dalisay, Ever, Galaxy, Ideal, State, Lyric, Capitol ang mga sikat na 'first run' na sinehan noon. Movie tickets were selling at P1.20 and P1.50 kung Advanced Road show (meaning kasabay sa international release). Kung medyo nagtitipid ka naman doon ka na lang sa 'second run' theatres for P0.85 lang double program pa mapapanood mo.

Remember those second run theatres like Main , Times, Society, Scala, Globe, Esquire, Vista, Republic, Mayfair and Palace. Bodavil was still a hit during the early 50s where Opera House featured the Lopito, Patsy, the Lou Salvador clan, Toto, Chichay, Ike Lozada, Pabo, Cachupoy etc. while Clover Theatre featured Pilita Corrales, Wing Duo, Reycard Duet, Bobby Gonzales, Sunday Contreras (anak ni Pugo), Eddie Mesa, Pugak & Tugak, Chuchi, Aruray, Doro & Popoy.. Did you know that German Moreno started as a utility man at Clover Theatre and did bit parts until he was discovered later on by Sampaguita Pictures.

Pero sikat din yung 7-Up, Lem-O-Lime, Canada Dry, Uva at Bireley's strawberry and pineapple..

Remember Halili Beer, Tody chocolate drink in cans, Horlicks malted milk tablets; Halili bus, Super (dog logo) Transit, Yujuico, JD & MD buses; MM Liner, Medina Transit, Capistrano Transit, Pantranco, La Mallorca Pambusco buses and taxis, Golden Taxicab and Yellow Taxicab, Dollar Taxi.

Your favorite past time then was reading comics like Pilipino Komiks, Espesyal Komiks, Hiwaga Klasiks, Kenkoy Komiks. Kung medyo class ka naman binabasa mo mga Classics Illustrated (sometimes we get our book report from these comic books instead of reading the assigned novel) o kaya ay Tiktik. Dell Comics and Gold Key Comics from the US were also available at magazine stands.

ShoeMart started in Carriedo (the first SM was named Shoe World) followed by the 2nd ShoeMart beside Ideal Theater and then SM Echague with a revolving restaurant at the top floor.

Safari Club beside Manila Zoo at the height of the 'Twist' craze, Dance-O-Rama with Pete Roa & Baby O'Brien every 5 PM on Channel 5. If you wanted an earlier teeny bopper show, you watched Eddie Mercado in DJ Dancetime on Channel 11. Siyempre naman pag Friday, Nite Owl Dance Party hosted by Lito Gorospe, featuring the Celtics. Another delight to watch was 9-Teeners hosted by Jose Mari Chan, Rom Azanza and Tito Osias (all Ateneans) on Channel 9. Sampaguita was first seen as a cage dancer at 9 Teeners. Her real name is Tessie Alfonso. She got married to Nilo Santos of the Jungle Cats. Jeanne Young also hosted another teeny bopper show called The Insiders which guested the more popular combos at that time.

Siyempre sikat pa rin ang Student Canteen pag tanghali followed by Darigold Jamboree, hosted by Leila Benitez with Eddie Ilarde and Pepe Pimentel and Bobby Ledesma. Sa primetime naman nandoon ang The Big Show nila Cris de Vera, Oscar Obliga cion a t Sylvia La Torre. Then it evolved into Oras ng Ligaya when it migrated to ABS-CBN.. Remember Uncle Bob's Lucky 7 Club.. Who would forget Buhay Artista starring Dolphy and Panchito and a take off of a popular radio program Sebya Mahal Kita, Tang Tarang Tang with Pugo and Bentot on the lead.

Sa radio naman siyempre ang Kapitan Kidlat, Kwentong Kutsero, Gabi ng Lagim, Salamat Po Doctor, Lola Basyang and of course Kahapon Lamang and Tia Dely's program which followed. Konti pa lang may TV set noon kaya sikat ka sa kalye niyo pag mayroon ka ng television at minsan SRO pa nga pag basketball (Yco, Ysmael, Utex, 7-UP)

Now anyone who missed those days can't really claim they've seen and tasted the best. Every generation has its own set of 'Aces'. Do you recall when: You tasted Darigold Evap, Liberty Condensada, Sunkist Orange (in tetra packs), Magnolia Chocolait, Klim (the word 'milk' spelled backwards), Big 20 Hamburgers, Foot-long hotdog, Nectar choconut, Tweet & Jiggs Candies (by Mr. Krieger), Tootsie Roll, Serg' s Chocolate, kerosene-flavored popcorn and kropeck along Dewey Blvd, dirty ice cream, Magnolia Ice Cream sandwich, Selecta ice cream (now Arce Dairy) and their fre sh carabao's milk, Magnolia popsicles in orange, chocolate and tutti frutti, langka flavors, Sison Ice Drop in monggo, and buko flavors, Milky Way's buko sherbet, Acme Supermarket' s sundaes and Coney Island's 32 flavors?

You went to: Arcegas at the Maranaw Arcade, Funhouse at Bricktown, Aguinaldo , Erehwon Bookstore, Alemars Bookstore, Bookmark, Botica Boie, Makati Supermarket D'Bankers Barbershop and Leila's Coffee Shop, Tropical Hut along Estrada, Acme Supermarket, Cherry Supermarket (now Foodarama), The Regent of Manila, Hotel Mabuhay, Manila Hilton, Christmas carnival (at Lawton in front of Letran College), Villa Pansol and Lido Beach, Aroma Beach and Jale Beach ?

Rizal what? 'Who would be crazy to build a cinema in the middle of nowhere?' It turned out to be the best theater in the city of Makati then (at the same site now occupied by Shangri-La Hotel).

We ate at: The original A&W along UN Avenue in Manila, Aristocrat's Flying Saucer (across Malate Church), Bonanza Restaurant, Little Quiapo, Country Bake Shop, Selecta Restaurant, Taza de Oro, New Europe, Madrid , Cucina Italiana, La Cibeles at A. Mabini, Luau, The Makati Automat, Sulo Restaurant ( Makati ), Bulakena, Casa Marcos, Au Bon Vivant, Salambao Restaurant, Dairy Queen, Di Mark's Pizza in Cubao, the elegant dining room of the old Army & Navy Club.

Botica Boie in Escolta, Alba's in Florida St. , Malate, Brown Derby and their signature foot-long hotdog came with its special, extra tarty mustard sauce and a hot, crispy bun.. We used to park at their drive-in bays after we were exhausted from all-night partying but with enough energy to gobble down sausages and soft drinks.

The Plaza was the favorite venue for all formal school and social functions. Every Friday night the Plaza became an instant disco-teque called 'POW'. Food was not a big factor so long as cozy couples could have their special table for two.

You shopped at: Bergs, Soriente Santos, Assanda's, Oceanic Commercial (where you bought original watches and jewelries), Syvel's, Walk-Over in Escolta, Good Earth Emporium, 15c and Up, Manila COD, Avesco at Avenida Rizal, Rustan's San Marcelino, Aguinaldo's in Cubao.

The original Rustan's was the garage of the Tantoco's residential house which was eventually converted into a dazzling shop filled with eclectic things and collectibles.

You would want your wardrobes (pang-porma) tailor-made. So you went to RM Manlapat, Toppers, Fifth Avenue, Estacio's, Sleek's (owned by Eddie Ilarde) or D'Sharp (owned by Dolphy) for your Continental style pants and shirt-jack (Marcos loved this style) or the sleeve shirt. If you wanted a groovy denim pants, you would buy the finest denim material at Divisoria and brought it to Gulapa's. Levi's was not a by-word then.

For school uniforms, we would love to wear our khaki pants from the famous RTW shop called Macomber in Quiapo. Or, our parents would just buy us a pair of Sabur or Savalbarro khakis. When it came to footwear, siyempre mas maganda pasadya especially when you want a good Chuka Boots, Spanish Boots or Beatles Boots. You went to Glenmore or Camara shoe makers. Pag casual naman siyempre US Keds, pero kung medyo low budget lang e puwede na rin ang US Kids. For sports shoes you would want a pair of Converse Chuck Taylor, and if you were on a low budget you bought Custombuilt or Edwardson. But if you wanted to float on water (as the advertisement claimed) you wore Marcelo Rubber Shoes black! Yan ang sinusuot ni Kenkoy.

Blockbuster movies were: The Ten Commandments, Shane, High Noon, King and I, South Paci fic, Horrors of Dracula, Gunfight at OK Corral, Psycho, House on Haunted Hill, Magnificent Seven, The Alamo, Spartacus, West Side Story, Ben Hur, Longest Day, Madame X, Guns of Navarone, King of Kings, El Cid, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Birds, Elvis' movies like Love Me Tender, Loving You, Jailhouse Rock, King Creole, Blue Hawaii , GI Blues, and the Beatles' Hard Days Night, Help, Yellow Submarine, The Graduate, Romeo and Juliet and of course the ever popular The Sound of Music.

You had your hair styled or permed by: Nomer's, Lita Rio, Grace Lagman, Dick & Lucy, and Kayumanggi. That was the time of Aqua Net stiff, foot-high beehives, French twist and Kiss Me liquid eyeliners and Pretty Quik instant facial blotters.

You sang: Dont Be Cruel and Hound Dog by Elvis, April Love by Pat Boone, Fool's Paradise by Buddy Holly, Mack the Knife by Bobby Darin, Bobby, Bobby, Bobby by Jo Ann Campbell, Devoted to You by the Everly Brothers, Someday by Ricky Nelson, One More Chance by Teddy Randazzo, Calendar Girl by Neil Sedaka, Puppy Love by Paul Anka, Young Ones by Cliff Richard, Walk Dont Run by The Ventures, Apache by the Shadows, A Hard Days Night, All My Lovin, Yesterday, Hey Jude by the Beatles, WorldWithout Love by Peter and Gordon, Cherish by the Association, Because by Dave Clark Five, Distant Shores by Chad and Jeremy.

Saved your whole month's allowance of P50.00 to watch the Beatles perform live at Rizal Memorial Coliseum in 1966 (July 4).

It was hip to listen to: Bingo Lacson, Lito Gorospe, Bong Lapira, Eddie Mercado, Jack Henson, Art Galindez of DZMB and Jo San Diego (past midnight) of DZMT, Sonia Basa, Ronnie Quintos, Naldy Castro of DZWS, Harry Gasser, Joe Cantada and Jose Mari Velez of DZHP; the singing sensations from Ateneo de Manila, RJ and the Riots, The Loonilarks, Jose Mari Chan and the Twofus ( Ronnie Henares and Jojit Paredes) and dance to live combo music garbed in cocktail dresses and dark suits.

DZMT was affiliated with the Manila Times and was one of two radio stations operating after 12 midnight... The other station was DZHP whose program was taped. Jo San Diego of DZMT went on live (she with the velvety bedroom voice. She could still be heard today at DWBR every Sunday afternoons).

And danced at: Manila Hotel's Jungle Bar, Stargazer, Bayside Night Club (with live music by the Carding Cruz band), the Nile , D'Flame, Rino's, Wells Fargo, Nautilus, Hi-Ball and Bulakena. Or, maybe rode a Motorco with your date and went around Dewey Boulevard . When you got hungry you would drop by the Barbecue Plaza . You tried your luck at the Pula-Puti joint in Russell Street .

Do you remember when: Malate streets were named after US States ( Pennsylvania , Tennessee , California , Colorado, Carolina, etc.); Paranaque , San Juan, Makati , Pasig , Las Pinas, Taguig, Pateros and Muntinlupa were municipalities of Rizal province; DLSU was De La Salle College, Poveda was Institucion Teresiana, Adamson University was the original St. Theresa's campus in San Marcelino, Robinsons Mall was the Assumption Convent campus, Petron was Esso, Villamor Air Base was then known as Nichols Air Base, bancas were aplenty in the Baclaran side of Dewey Blvd.. (now Roxas Blvd. ) and traffic was non-existent in Tagaytay.

PLDT telephone numbers were five digits and you used your index finger to dial a number one at a time.

Sikat ka sa barkada kung may 'syota' kang 'Colegiala' (Assumption, STC, St. Scho, Maryknoll, Holy Spirit, St. Paul 's, St. Joseph's , Sienna, PWU, Sta. Isabel at La Consolacion) . Siyempre hindi rin naman papahuli ang mga coeds natin from UP, UST, UE and FEU. As proof, you should be wearing her high school ring in your pinkie finger.

If you remember all these things, you're history in great company and I dare say.................. HAPPY TO BE !!! : )

Larry, here are some pictures of the turnovers of checks to Sis. Connie of SAS and Mayor Jun for our town. As I mentioned earlier, the amount we collected was lesser than what was turned over. SASAI President made up the difference. Larry, our calamity fund relief is a continuing endeavor, so I encourage your readers to give to this fund drive. You may send your assistance to our Treas. Liza S. Fajardo. I would like to take this opportunity in behalf of SASAI to congratulate Efren Penaflorida for his winning the CNN Hero of the year, an honor he truly deserved. Also let me express my personal sense of loss for the untimely demise of Manang Teresing Villanueva, who let me in her life and shared some life experiences and memories, she taught me as I was growing up. God Bless her soul and may she rest in peace. thanks Larry.

Stress

A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience,
Raised a glass of water and asked;
'How heavy is this glass of water?'

Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g.

The lecturer replied, 'The absolute weight doesn't matter.
It depends on how long you try to hold it.
If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem.
If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm.
If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance.
In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.'

He continued,
'And that's the way it is with stress management.
If! we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later,
As the burden becomes increasingly heavy,
We won't be able to carry on.

'As with the glass of water,
You have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again.
When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.
'So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work or whatever is bothering you down. Don't carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow.

Whatever burdens you're carrying now,
Let them down for a moment if you can.
'So, my friend, put down anything that may be a burden to you right now. Don't pick it up again until after you've rested a while.'

Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto Post Fight Press Conference

Manny Pacquiao, the undisputed pride of the Philippines ruled the boxing ring on Saturday, November 15, 2009! As I sat in front of the television last night, quiet, reflective and perhaps, anxious about the possible fate of our kababayan, Manny Pacquaio, I can't help but whisper a prayer. In the past few weeks preceeding the thrilla, many news anchors and newspaper reports surmised about the equally devastating power of Miguel Coto, a well known Puerto Rican boxer, who has decimated much of Latin America's best in his weight level. Miguel Coto's pronouncements that he trained for speed, studied Pacquiao's tactics, and was ready to unleash his arsenal of strategies and weaponry which was intended to punish him. These reports bothered my mind and consciousness for several months pondering about how Manny would handle Coto in the ring. Much of televised previews of Coto's punishing execution of his opponents tortured my mind, too. Honestly, I was deeply worried. However, as the fight approached, I tried to console myself by reviewing the past arsenal stats that Manny is capable of unleashing: speed, power, strategy and even, of course, the unavoidable genius of Freddie Roach, his trainer. More reassuring for my sensibilities, and I am sure, many Filipinos around the world do know, was his unswerving faith in God...the best weaponry, Manny has ever had. This reminds me of King David's experiences too, when he was surrounded by his opponents, he sought God's help and walla, everyone of his enemies evaporated. When the day of the fight came, my worries began to reach its zenith; Coto's speed and power seemed to overwhelm and devastate Manny's innate skills. My heart began to race like crazy; similar to the usual anxiety when I would speak in front of thousands of people overseas. Nonetheless, I watched closely, not wasting any minute to use the restroom, knowing that this is in one of the best fights in Manny's boxing career. To relax myself, I would scan the ringside to find Nanay Dionisia but it was Rosalio Pacquiao, Manny's estranged dad, who would be often flashed on the screen sporting a thumbs-up sign, indicating everything is going fine.

To put things into perspective about Manny, practices admirable values that not many of us have learned from our schools in both, public and private institutions. You see, despite his father's absence in his life for so many years, Manny went back to his roots and embraced his old man, building him a new home and sharing his successes, with no remorse, and even with blatant opposition from many quarters of his family, including Nanay Dionisia, the only parent, who, amidst poverty, raised him to what he is now. While watching one of the Filipino shows, I can't help but have a smirk on my face when I heard Nanay Dionisia joked around,..."kung wala si Mommy, wah si Manny (money), " obviously referring to Manny, and the incomparable riches brought about by his son's rise to stardom.

Additionally, I'd like to share my perceptions about this man, although, I usually detract from doing so, to many of our Filipino leaders. It bears repeating that Manny demonstrates how Filipinos should or are capable of doing, that is, if they really practice, what our real values are, the essence of what our forebears have taught us. Despite his fame and stardom, he shares his riches to many of our "kababayans," he continues to dole out food, medicines (he built a hospital) and a slew of basic needs, continously, even as I write this tribute. I can go on and on but my point here is that, Manny, in all his glories, remains to be humble, honest, true to God and country, and most importantly, the poor. You can tell me all the other things that you don't like about Manny (Krista Ranillo, Ara Mina, Valerie Conception and the list goes on), but who has done what he had? Who? Tell me?

Manny Pacquiao is a man who loves God and country, humble yet proud, invincible yet calm and a master tactician. His victory shows the world the resilience, power and mind of the Filipino warrior. He has beaten all of Latin America's best warriors, North America's pride, Asia's boxing heroes and even Europe's greatest. He stands tall for his height and proud of his Filipino heritage. When I travel overseas or across this great nation, they do not recognize me because of our politicians nor open up a conversation about our history but they eloquently know the Philippines because of Manny Pacquaio. Often, I am humbled by their myriads of descriptives and heroic performance of this man, as if, I too share in the values that Manny espouse. Mind you, I am often bombarded by questions about Manny...I can't help but just shyly smile and admit that I feel humbled by the achievements of Manny. Upon reflection, many have been said about us, Filipinos but thank God for everything that Manny is all about and of course, to Mommy Dionisia, for raising her son, to be a God and Filipino loving human being.

Many Filipino stars have come and gone but Manny will be one of the heroes that will linger in our psyche for years, perhaps, forever.

To me, he is one of our national treasures, and the epitome of how and what a Filipino should be. We are proud of you, Manny. Agbiag ka, gayyem!

Sad but true.....Only a miracle can save us.

Washington Times articles about the Philippines

The Washington Times. [Commentary] Richard Halloran 10/14/2009.

In an East Asia that is generally experiencing political and economic progress from Seoul to Singapore, the Philippines stands out as a running sore that seems to have no cure.

The Asia Foundation, the nongovernmental organization seeking to stimulate development, has reported that the southern Philippines "suffers from poor infrastructure, poverty, and violence that has claimed more than 120,000 lives in the last four decades" of civil strife, terror and insurgencies, and crime that goes unchecked.

A retired U.S. military officer with long experience in Asia said that "the fundamental problem in the Philippines is that the Philippine government has not figured out how to help the people, to pick up the garbage and to educate the children."

An American civilian official agreed, saying a "failure in governance" was the basic cause of the misery in the Philippines. He pointed to "the feudal society in the Philippines" and contended that "until that is changed, the problems will continue to be unresolved."

From all accounts, Philippine and foreign, corruption is pervasive throughout the archipelago. Renaud Meyer, a representative of the United Nations Development Program in Manila, was quoted in the Philippine press earlier this year as saying corruption "is a primary obstacle in the effective delivery of public services and fulfillment of basic rights."

He predicted it would get worse. "These are challenging times for all of us in our fight against corruption, especially in the next two years," Mr. Meyer said. "For one, we are in the midst of an impending international economic crisis, which is affecting both developed and developing economies. Second, 2010 is election period in the Philippines. "

The central government in Manila has appeared hapless in the face of repeated natural disasters in recent months.

The Philippine archipelago, which form the eastern rim of the South China Sea, not only have experienced a breakdown in basic law and order; the country provides a haven and training site for terrorists and insurgents to move into the rest of Southeast Asia. They travel from the southern Philippines along island chains through the Sulu and Celebes seas into Malaysia, Indonesia and beyond.

In the Philippines itself, the terrorists of the Abu Sayyaf, Jemaah Islamiya, and the Rajah Solaiman Movement, plus the communist New People's Army, operate with near impunity. A contingent of U.S. special operations forces, usually numbering 600 troops, has been assisting the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) for about seven years in the southern Philippines but with little visible success.

"The AFP," said a longtime Philippine hand, "are glad to have other people do their fighting."

A U.S. State Department report four years ago asserted, "The major, and disturbing, trend in the Philippines has been the growing cooperation among the Islamist terrorist organizations operating in the country: Jemaah Islamiya, the Abu Sayyaf Group, and the Rajah Sulaiman Movement." The latter comprises Christian converts to Islam, which allows them to pass undetected in other parts of the Philippines.

In a similar report in the spring, the department said Philippine troops, with the intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance help of U.S. forces, "continued to
marginalize the remaining numbers" of the Islamic terrorists. But the report said the 5,000-strong New People's Army "continued to disrupt public security and business operations with intermittent attacks" on communications and transportation everywhere.

Late last month, two American soldiers were killed in the southern Philippines by a roadside bomb believed to have been planted by terrorists linked to al Qaeda. The Associated Press said they were the first American troops to die in an attack in the Philippines in seven years. The U.S. Embassy said they were on a resupply mission for a school construction project on the island of Jolo.

An obvious and disturbing question: Were their deaths an omen of things to come?

Richard Halloran is a freelance writer and former New York Times correspondent based in Honolulu.

Another Washington Times Article about the Philippines The World Bank issued a report years ago about the biggest cause of the endemic poverty and lack of progress: Corruption on BOTH ENDS of the government revenue and disbursement system. On the revenue side, the BIR collects less that fifty percent of maximum possible collections. The customs function is world famous for its corruption, taking in probably even a lower percentage of total possible receipts.

On the disbursement side, funds that go to public works, education and national defense are stripped of "commissions" and "bribes" to grease the palms of government officials. Hence the roads and flood systems are in a state of disrepair, police are not paid enough and public school children have to wallow in the midst of substandard facilities and materials.

Other Asian countries where corruption exists can afford these peccadilloes because they possess natural resources like petroleum which compensates for the "withdrawal" of funds from the public system. The Philippines has also not made it past the import substitution phase and is unable to feed its own people with its agricultural output. It can thank the oligarchies that have dominated the sugar, coconut and lumber industries over the past fifty years; oligarchies whose main objective was to enrich their families, maintain private armies and withhold revenues from the government. Worse, these oligarchies operate as countries within a country, hundreds of miles from Manila with citizens so attached to the teats of the Robber Barons that they don't care a whit about who is in political power, just as long as the agricultural powers that be provide them with their daily subsistence.

Presidential elections are a Metro Manila fashion fad, the rest of the 80% of the country does not care because they feel that whoever sits in Malacanang will not make their lives any better. And they are right.

There is no cure for this problem unless one hundred million palms descend from the heavens and slap every citizen on the side of the head as a wake up call. The political powers that be will remain there for the rest of time, regenerating descendants who will serve to continue their forbears' efforts. Martial law would have been good, but BEEN THERE DONE THAT. Filipinos can just sit back and wait for the next natural disaster where they again will be ill prepared due to lack of civil infrastructure. Sit back and pray.
