Subject: Movie Monday! What did you see this weekend? I saw two Oscar-nominated films.

First, I saw Flee. It's nominated in three categories: Best International Film, Best Animated Film and best Documentary Film. It is a Danish film (with subtitles) written and directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen. It is about his friend who was an Afghan refugee who he interviews about his life. Rasmussen decided to animate the majority of the film as his friend Amin has some secrets that could get him in trouble. I'll leave it at that, but I highly recommend this one. I hope it sweeps those three categories. It was very moving.
Next, I saw Licorice Pizza, Oscar-nominated for best film. It's a kooky comedy that takes place in the San Fernando Valley in 1973 and has a cast that is...unexpected. It is written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who employs some of his friends and family in various roles. The pop/rock band Haim for one, Anderson's wife Maya Rudolph, plus Bradley Cooper playing a bonkers version of Jon Peters (when he was dating Barbra Streisand), Tom Waits and Sean Penn among others. I can't even explain what it's about, but I did like it.

I remember the Licorice Pizza stores from the 70s. Nostalgia...

We rented House of Gucci, a star-studded cast stuck in a messy, choppy adaptation of a book about the fall-out of the Gucci family from its own firm. The performances are well done, especially Lady Gaga and Adam Driver. I wish Jeremy Irons and Al Pacino had bigger roles. I had to Google Gucci to figure out what really happened. Ugh.
