Subject: Movie Monday! What did you see this weekend? I saw

The Good Liar, a film from last year that was made available this weekend on HBO. It stars Helen Mirren, Ian McKellen, Russell Tovey and Jim Carter (Carson from Downton Abbey) in a cat-and-mouse con that I thought was pretty good. Mirren is always so good and it was fun to see Jim Carter play a con man.

The script was originally for 5 white Viet Nam vets who return to Nam to retrieve the remains of their squad leader. Lee reimagined the film with 5 black vets, and focused on the black experience, with issues of patriotism and prejudice. The film started out so well, but deteriorated into violence that made no sense. I expected more from Spike Lee.
