Subject: I am just glad JLo did not get nominated
In reply to: LAwoman 's message, "Oscar nominations list..." on 10:27:47 01/13/20 Mon

Did anyone see Hustlers? I saw it over Christmas with my sister and imo it was the worst film I have ever seen and JLo seemed like she was being JLo. No acting required.

Of those nominated I have only seen Judy (also over Christmas). I thought Renee was really good in it but can't compare as I did not see any of the others.

My understanding of Tom Hanks as Mr Rogers is that it isn't really about him per se so the character is not the star despite the title but maybe I have that wrong. I did hear Joaquin was phenomenal so if Tom wanted a chance (or people wanted him to have a chance) he was going to have to be in the supporting category.

The Oscars don't seem to be all that worth it anymore because it is so political. Studios push to get their film/actor an Oscar and it no longer seems to really be about whose performance is best but rather which machine is driving the hardest. IDK maybe I am just cynical :)

Sometimes a fantastic performance just gets released in a year where they're just overrun by bigger, more well-promoted performances. Like in 1939.

gowns and jewels. I think there have always been acting and directing snubs and films with a massive promoting machine get the attention. But the academy does still nominate smaller, independent films. The other concern is that if you go all in on quality, you risk losing the TV audience that is needed to sell advertising. The masses want to see awards go to Marvel films and Disney! It is a business after all. I haven't seen Hustlers, but I noticed it was available OnDemand. Thanks for the warning!
