Subject: Movie Monday! What did you see this weekend? I

didn't see any movies, but lots of drama! All in the form of sports--the U.S. Open (Yay, Coco!), college and NFL football and of course, my Dodgers.

Big congrats to Coco Gauff!! America's new sweetheart. Poor USA basketball team had to vie for 3rd and then lost that too. They will get better with new players in the run up to the actual Olympics.

Olympic squad. Coming off a long season just for FIBA was probably not so appealing to the star players. Congrats to Germany though. They went undefeated!

[> On my flight back from London yesterday -- AllyG, 14:45:38 09/13/23 Wed [1]

I watched Belfast and Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Really enjoyed Belfast. Jude Hill (Buddy) was really amazing. I was in NI earlier this year (Derry) and recently finished a book about the IRA so I don't really know what I was expecting. I hadn't really heard much about it except that it was good. And it was.

Funny thing about Crazy, Stupid, Love...don't think it would be made today. It was particularly jarring at the end when the 17 year old babysitter gave the 13/14 year old kid nude pictures of her. Pretty sure that would be a criminal act these days and get people very upset. That being said I love Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone so I enjoyed it while cringing :)

we Americans don't know much about it. I was in Ireland last fall, staying in Dublin, and we took a day trip to Belfast, a beautiful and historic city. People there were so friendly and proud of their work to restore and modernize public spaces.

Crazy, Stupid Love. That part was cringey. If all goes well, I will be going to Ireland and Scotland in July. The desire to reunite Ireland is gaining some traction as previously colonized territories are starting to flex and reclaim their cultures and languages. Scotland still holds the occasional ballot measure to separate from the kingdom. It gets closer every time. The current leader of India is pushing for the country to only be referred to as Bhārat.

been previously banned and later, discouraged, by the Crown and were dying off. You can even learn them now on Babbel and Duolingo!
