Subject: a poem

A poet’s guide
This is the poem I submnitted into the poetry competition. 4th place

A poet’s guide.

Coping with

Dorton College.

I wish to help you stay alive,

As you stride to read this guide,

A poet’s wish to help you cope,

Watch the food, you might choke!

College life can be quite a muddle,

So read this guide carefully and you shouldn’t have to struggle.

There are always many monsters; I think they call them teachers,

The homework they throw at you, what a waste of trees!

You hardly need to take it all, there’s no knowledge that you need.

You’ve heard it all before, you know it off by heart,

There’s nothing ever difficult, so why does it play a part?

Oh the waste of you time, but don’t resort to darts.

There’s better ways to rid of teachers, as you find the end of term,

You’ll be gone in an instant, no teachers when you turn.

But that’s not all to have you worried, to put you down like that,

Wonder what they’re cooking… how much fat n’ rats?

Well it’s better than old school food, and you do have a choice…

‘Take it or leave it, while the food’s still moist’.

So hope you’ve taken my fair advice,

Be aware what you’re in for when you apply for your job,

Dorton from the outside may seem rather nice,

We’ll have to introduce you, to the latest kitchen mice.

If you’re expecting a challenge, on low pay demand,

And can teach a respectful lesson, with a challenge to the class,

To respond very rationally on many tutor’s tasks,

Then accept the job, you won’t be harmed.

Just listen to Graham to get your little treat,

And when you hit promotion, you’ll be hard to beat!
