Crash kills BU student, 19

By CHRIS KREPICH

Press Enterprise Writer

BLOOMSBURG -- A master bowler and Bloomsburg University business student from DuBois died in a horrific motorcycle crash Monday in Texas, officials said.

Robert "BJ" Kessler IV, 19, was tossed over the handlebars of a motorcycle and landed under the rear of a tractor trailer traveling ahead of him at about 10:30 p.m., Denton police told the Denton Record-Chronicle in Texas.

Kessler was riding alongside men on two separate bikes when he lost control of his 1999 Honda while getting onto Interstate 35 in Denton, police said. He hit a construction barrel, launching his body over the front of the bike, police said.

Kessler, a former part-time employee at the P-Nut Bowl and Beverage Station beer distributor in Bloomsburg, was declared dead at the crash site from blunt force injuries, according to a Tarrant County medical examiner, the Texas newspaper reported.

Kessler was a sophomore business administration management major at BU. He was enrolled at the university since at least 2001.

Friends said Kessler was staying recently with a brother in Texas.

300 game

Kessler was an avid bowler who rolled a perfect 300 game Feb. 3, and he helped revive BU's bowling team, said friend Josh Roberts, manager and mechanic at the P-Nut Bowl in Scott Township.

"I don't think I've ever seen anyone as excited after throwing one as he was," Roberts said of the perfect game. "It kind of separates the good bowlers from the upper echelon. It's very rare."

Bowling ring

Kessler came close to bowling a perfect game a number of other times and scored a 299 at the American Bowling Congress state tournament April 13, Roberts said.

Kessler's ring from the tournament was delivered to the P-Nut Bowl Tuesday, and Roberts got a call about the accident an hour later, he said.

BU bowling team

Kessler and his roommate, Jason Miele of Wilkes-Barre, were instrumental in creating the bowling team at BU, Roberts said. Kessler even took out a personal loan to get it started, he added.

The team was formed in the fall and competed against teams from Penn State, Temple and Syracuse, among others, Roberts said.

Kessler and Miele liked bowling so much they got a box of old pins and set up a lane in their yard, Roberts said.

'Hey, buddy'

Besides bowling, Kessler liked to golf and play poker with friends, sometimes into the wee hours of the morning, Roberts said.

"He was always good for a laugh," Roberts said. "If something comical was going on, chances are he was probably involved.

"A common catch phrase of his was, 'Hey, Buddy.' He was definitely well liked. He will be missed."

Earlier crash

Roberts said Kessler had a motorcycle while in Bloomsburg and was involved in a crash last fall or winter.

Kessler told Roberts a car pulled out in front of him and the bike fell on its side.

The crash left Kessler scraped and kept him from the bowling alley a while, Roberts said. It also discouraged him from getting on motorcycles for a while, he added.

Hard worker

Kessler may have been a jokester, but he was also a hard worker, Roberts said.

Beverage Station owner Karen Roadarmel said Kessler was nice to customers and a good employee during his short time there.

She said Kessler had told her he was moving to Texas with his brother to work. She thought he planned on returning to Bloomsburg in the fall, she said.

Beverage Station manager Kelly Weaver said Kessler told her he planned to go to school for heating and air conditioning service.
