Mapping Hip Hop LA: Bridging Communities In and Beyond the City
The Working Group in Hip Hop Studies extends a cordial and open invitation to
an afternoon/evening of events centered on hip hop in Los Angeles. The
afternoon panel, hosted by Prof. Cheryl Keyes of the Department of
Ethnomusicology at UCLA and members of the Working Group, will feature series
of multimedia presentations from such distinguished founders,
representatives,
and organizers of hip hop- oriented local community organizations as Dawn
Smith
and Monica Delgado of J.U.I.C.E., Kublai Kwon of the Asian Hip Hop
Summit, and
Prof. Ben Caldwell of Cal Arts and founder of Project Blowed and KAOS
Network. Each of these groups in various ways seeks to extend the political
possibilities of hip hop music, dance, artwork, style, fellowship, and
appreciation into, across, and beyond the multiple communities of
Los Angeles. The presentations will conclude with a round-table symposium,
encouraging questions and discussion between the presenters, the
audience, and
members of the Working Group. Following the round- table, J.U.I.C.E. will
preview and release their latest CD project, a collaborative effort and
culmination of a two-year grant project with UCLA, and refreshments will be
served. The evening will conclude with a special screening of internationally-
acclaimed director Kevin Fitzgerald's award-winning documentary
