Angel Animals Story of the Week

Visit us at www.angelanimals.net

Dear Friends of Angel Animals,

Welcome to the Angel Animals Story of the Week.

With the warmer spring weather here in Minnesota, we're enjoying longer walks with our dog Taylor and seeing new life budding all around us. The human bears come out of the caves where they have been hibernating for the winter. Taylor has even reconnected with her favorite human bear, a lovely man with a dog named Sam, who carries dog biscuits in his back pocket and always has one for her.

After reading in a previous Story of the Week about Linda's experience with Cuddles and a bad dream, Paula Timpson sent us the following poem. Paula is a poet, animal lover, and one of the contributors to our book GOD'S MESSENGERS.

Cuddles
By Paula Timpson

Cuddles
knows
she is spirit
she places her soft
pad
on Linda's forehead and
awakens the
light within her to shine and glow
as the moonlight...

Today's story is about a rescued kitty named Smokey who provided the solution to a life or death situation. Are you noticing how many of these stories involve the rescued animal returning the good deed and rescuing a human?

We welcome your stories for possible future publication in this newsletter or in one of our upcoming books.

We invite you to e-mail this week's newsletter in its entirety to others who might enjoy it.

Animal blessings,
Allen & Linda Anderson

STORY OF THE WEEK

SMOKEY BRINGS THE BREATH OF LIFE
By Judy Bierman

For several months, when I would awaken during the night I would hear my husband Bill breathe very irregularly. He would snort a breath and perhaps take one or two more short breaths. Then he would not breath for the next twenty seconds or so before the snorting began, and short breaths would once again follow.

Somewhere I had read about sleep apnea and knew this is what my husband suffered from. When I was aware of his breathing poorly, I would always wake him up and tell him to turn on his side, which then helped a bit.

I worried about the nights I had to work, though, and couldn't be home to monitor Bill's breathing. I worked graveyard shift -- the same time my husband sleeps!

Bill always woke up tired and he lacked energy to do more than about two hours of activity. The rest of the day he was exhausted. I knew the sleep apnea was to blame but knew, also, that if unattended, he could possibly never begin breathing again!

When I came home one morning and talked to Bill about my concerns, he stopped to think and replied, "Honey, you don't have to worry about not being here when I am sleeping. Smokey, (the one-year-old cat we had rescued a year earlier) jumps on my chest and wakes me up several times a night!"

Smokey, it appears, was also aware of Bill's breathing problem. The cat was there, monitoring the situation, when I couldn't be, waking Bill up when he failed to breath. No wonder Smokey slept so soundly for hours after Bill got up for the day.

Bill now has a breathing machine for use when sleeping and is regaining his energy. But Smokey diligently watched over him until Bill obtained that machine.

Our little guardian angel was heaven-sent for sure.

BIO:
Judy and her husband Bill live in the north woods of Wisconsin, a small town called Manitowish Waters. Smokey, a beautiful, smart, gray Maine Coone-mix, is now about one-and-one-half years old. Judy and Bill found Smokey trying to keep warm by huddling in the window well of a house. Judy and Bill rescued Smokey when he was just about five weeks old, and he has been their pride and joy ever since.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT:

Could the annoyance you feel over a cat or dog waking you up at night be turned into gratitude if you found out why this is happening? Perhaps it's not as dramatic as saving your life, but maybe this little messenger is being nudged to wake you up to remember an important dream.

ANGEL ANIMALS QUOTES OF THE WEEK

"We named the DOG Indiana!"
--Henry Jones, Sr. (Sean Connery) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

"Anybody who doesn't know what soap tastes like never washed a dog."
--Franklin P. Jones

"...One obstacle to an understanding is the general attitude which resists the unfamiliar, especially if it has to do with animals."
--J. Allen Boone, KINSHIP WITH ALL LIFE, page 73

"For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings, they are other Nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth."
--Henry Beston, 1928

"Animals are capable of great kindness and compassion; they rescue, comfort, and care for us. They are one of life's great blessings."
--Kristin Von Kreisler, THE COMPASSION OF ANIMALS
