THE GREEN PARK VISUAL ARTS FESTIVAL 2008

Arts in the park, every picture will tell a story...

The sun will be casting it's light on this years event in more ways than one. On Sunday 11th May at Waunfawr Park, Crosskeys from 11am til late, Groundwork Caerphilly will continue the Green Park Festival theme by bringing the first ever Environmental Visual Arts Festival to Gwent. Natural Solar rays will be used to power a unique cinema experience in a blacked out marquee provided by the award winning organisation Undercurrents, who specialise in environmental globalisation films. Along with this, local video diaries and digital stories will be screened to promote how the great outdoors can benefit our lives and educate us all in protecting what we have around us.

Pending suitable weather conditions and availabilty Festival goers will have the opportunity to take a free ride in a Hot Aired Tethered Balloon that will rise high into the sky and take in the amazing vista's of the Sirhowy and Western Valleys. Once back down to earth there will still be plenty to keep all the family occupied. A climbing wall will be available to take you back up again, numerous workshops will have you all enthralled into the crafts of pottery, creative play, African drums, puppet, kite & mask making. Any budding Ray Mear's amongst you will have the chance to learn the skills of bush craft & survival brought to us by the experts Wild Spirit.

Phew, in need of a rest already? Take a quiet stroll round the art & photographic galleries to view the work of local children and groups. Pick up a bargain from professional artists who will be displaying and selling potential future masterpieces! Feeling inspired? Join the graffiti workshop and learn the proper artistic way to spray paint. This year the park will be left with a permanent feature on a 30ft wall.

The stage has been set for the students of Crosskeys College who will be performing medleys from the West End musicals We Will Rock You and Hairspray. You will have all four seasons in one day when the kids of Waunfawr Primary School dance to the Vivaldi Classic.

A great line up of diverse music will be playing throughout the day from the recently restored electric Edwardian bandstand. To name but a few, a range of musicians from the Islwyn Acoustic Guitar Club will have you singing the blues, Ian Day & the Albino Frogs will sure make you leap, whilst the haunting vocals of Stephen Light and the Black Sand Band can potentially water your eyes. If you fancy a jig, join in the line and break dancing workshops, they are sure to have you spinning, right round baby, right round!

Worldly healthy foods will be on sale to suit every appetite, but please beware that Mr Persuasive the penny farthing riding policeman doesn't whip your Cotswold dairy ice-cream from your grasp. You have been warned, there's sure to be some clowning around!

If you want green fingers and fancy growing your own, walk over to the Forest School where you can pick or pot a plant from the newly revamped community green house.

Plus much, much, more throughout the day..

It's nature watch time as the daylight falls into night, join Caerphilly Borough Councils own version of Bill Oddie, Dave Beveridge. Whilst the hog roasts slowly on the spit, he will be setting up lures, white sheets and bright lights to attract moths, birds and bats from the surrounding tree's.

The Green Park Visual Arts Festival 2008 is completely free! It's guaranteed to provide everlasting family memories to everyone who attends, what ever the weather, it's an experience that must not be missed...

Groundwork Caerphilly, Changing Places, Smiles on Faces...
