I don't remember listening to any radio about the Cuban missile crisis, only because I was serving onboard a US Navy ship off the coast of Cuba at the time.

However, I do distinctly remember the air raid drills during WWII in the '43 - '44 time period when all lights went out and curtains went over all windows. Lived in Interlaken Garden Apartments at the time and remember the air raid wardens coming around to turn off all the interior hall lights and make sure no light was showing through the apartment windows.
