Our first two years in Tuckahoe, we had no car (what?). True. In 1950 we inherited my (great-) uncle’s 1939 LaSalle—with a two-pane windshield and running boards. Our first new car was a 1955 Ford “Customline” in which I took my drivers test. My first car was another inheritance—from my grandfather—a ’59 Chevy Bel Air. I retrieved it from NJ and drove it to College, teaching myself to drive a stick on the trip. (I can still hear it.)
