I remember the Little League, but I can't say it is a fond memory. Now I can look back and understand what I learned.

There were many kids who have the ability to play the game competitively, and there are many who can not. I count myself in that latter group. Little League tryout time was one of sadness for us, because we knew we could not possibly make the team, and therefore didn't even try.

Although my friends and I had played the game in back yards and sandlots, and loved it, we were not blessed with the level of "talent" required, and were even discouraged from showing up. Often we were not even told when tryouts were being held, and we found out after-the-fact.

It proved a valuable lesson, now lost on today's kids. You can't always be part of everything no matter how much you would like to be.

Community baseball, football, and soccer leagues for children today are places where all are "included", anyone who wants to play becomes part of the team. Coaches are "required" to give each child a minimum amount of playing time, regardless of their ability.

The shielding of today's youngsters has deprived many of them of learning, at a very early age, how to handle disappontment. It also not taught them how to channel the talents they do have into activities that are both entertaining and rewarding.
