With Halloween upon us, I remember the fun Halloween parade that used to start at Town Hall (although I don't remember where it went from there...). And of course, who could forget painting the windows of the local merchants' stores? I still have my Third Place trophy for painting the window of 3-D Cleaners on Mill Road - my friend Susan and I painted 3 witches and while I also can't remember what each witch looked like, our stunning work of art was entitled "Which Witch is Which?" I believe this great award was bestowed upon me in 1974.
As for the trick or treating, obviously it bore no resemblence to the way it's done today. My friends and I went out with a small group of dads trailing us (eventually in later years, we didn't have the dads), and we stayed out for what seemed like several hours. We went to virtually every house in whatever neighborhood(s) we were in. Oftentimes, folks invited us into their homes while they doled out the candy, instead of us kids just standing out on the doorstep. It was oh-so-innocent, and seemingly safe.
And Mischief Night the night before...we could always count on eggs, shaving cream, and toilet papers ending up on cars, windows, etc. But again, fairly harmless, it seemed.
I feel bad for many kids these days who won't know that kind of freedom we enjoyed (even if perhaps, looking back, it was a bit risky?)in those days, although in my small Connecticut town, we come pretty close to that same type of atmosphere. We do the window painting, too!
