Subject: Going to the dentist

been avoiding this for twenty years- LOL

but when it affects the ability to eat- something's gotta give- :)

Will be taking some pill to make me loopy instaed of novocaine- has anyone else done that?

Just curious- who's a faithful once a year dentist visitor and who avoids them like the bubonic plague?

[> I'm like you, I avoided dentists like the plague until last year when my teeth got so bad. I haven't taken the pill, but I highly recommend the nitrous oxide gas. A couple of deep breaths of the nitrous & you won't care what they do. They call it laughing gas and it does relax you & makes you giddy. My dentist says it's one of the few legal ways to get "high". Some dentists also have hot towels & chairs that massage you while they work. And most either have headphones or you can bring your own to listen to music. [> Good luck! I hate going to the dentist, but I do--twice a year. I've never had a pill, but I have heard of a thing called oral conscious sedation. Sounds tempting, but so far I've done okay with novocaine. -- Deemus, 13:12:37 03/27/14 Thu [1]

[> well I saw no point to the pill - it was supposed to make me loopy enough not to care what he did and supposedly put people to sleep- Nope- wide awake- not even a little loopy - I thnk it was something like - Halcion? - still was fully aware of when he gave me the hypodermics (which is my problem) and on top of that - I could feel the work he did- so- i have two fixed teeth and hopefully I won't have to go back for 20 more years- :) -- chris k, 19:27:27 03/27/14 Thu [1]

[> I have faithfully gone to the dentist every six months for all my life with a break of 4 yrs when I moved out west. I have all my teeth except the wisdom teeth. I don't like the occasional fillings and crowns etc., but honestl, you can't feel anything. Modern dentists are fabulous, and my teeth arre important to me. I know what one of my friends goes through needing implants etc, so I consider myself lucky. Don't worry Chris. The new dopy stuff will get you through and you won't feel afraid anymore. -- Cece (bad oral hygeine can lead to serious illnessess so don't delay.), 02:09:11 03/28/14 Fri [1]

[> [> Whoops, I guess I didn't read your second post. Good for you Chris! You got through it. But you should try the frequnt cleaning. The machines are amazing. I swear it's more painfully gettting a hiar perm! -- Cece, 02:13:52 03/28/14 Fri [1]

[> Also a faithful "every-six-months" dentist-goer. Hubby and kids, too. PLEASE set that 6-month appointment before you walk out of this one. And start flossing if you don't already. You don't have to floss all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep! And think how much better your teeth will look and feel! And MOST denal insurance policies allow TWO FREE CLEANINGS every 12 months. AND you'll get a free toothbrush, too! -- The Chief, 19:57:40 03/29/14 Sat [1]

[> I'm another faithful dentist goer...twice a year. My dad was instrumental in this and when he died at almost his 90th birthday, he had had one cavity and one tooth pulled in his entire life. I can't say the same, but I'll avoid all the oral work I can if it's possible. -- jenks-waving to chris k, 07:52:59 03/30/14 Sun [1]

[> [> hi jenks!- I had so many cavities as a kid that i have more silver in my mouth than white! - I have all the teeth that will fit in my mouth- :) - we had to pull quite a few when I had braces put on - all I had done was one cavity and repair a cracked tooth (yes there's a reason you don't open stuck nailpolish bottles with your teeth. sigh -- chris k, 09:01:46 03/30/14 Sun [1]

[> Every 12 months for me. I have been very lucky. I didn't have any filling until my mid thirties and ten years later I haven't had any since. -- Katiegirl, 19:48:40 04/01/14 Tue [1]
