Almost all of on-base housing allows pets- except for the Towers (multi-level apartment style living/high rise).

If you are unable to get into any housing OTHER than the towers, off base housing is abundant, and it is not too difficult to find housing that accepts pets.

You should be fine. :) The only issues right now that pet owners are facing is if they own LARGE breed dogs (finding airlines to ship pets over 100 lbs can be COSTLY and extremely difficult). Also, the heat embargos begin mid May and June (depending on the airline). Shipping a pet during this time is discouraged for no other reason than the safety of your pet.

Our dog suffered a heat stroke at age 10 months, during an evening walk, after only 10 min. of exercise!! It was SHOCKING! The heat and humidity combo is what's extreme..
High humidity makes it nearly impossible for panting to cool your pet down since water droplets cannot evaporate from the tongue.... it's serious business here, and dozens of pets die from heat stroke every year here!

So try to come early, or have your pet shipped to you later, after the embargos are lifted. We arrived here in July with a cat - but the cat was able to ride inside the cabin with us, so the heat embargo did not effect our travel.

If your dog is small and can be accommodated inside the cabin of the plane, you'll be fine.

Please contact the veterinary clinic for more information regarding bringing a pet into Okinawa. It now can take several months to complete the paperwork and process required by the Japanese Govt. - so get started QUICK! Don't stress out about housing - you should be JUST fine.
I do suggest going to a building supply center and purchasing fencing materials BEFORE packing up to come to Oki.. it can be tough to find here, and EXPENSIVE to buy off base!
