Subject: Re: PCS to Okinawa - Soft pet carrier allowed on AMC?
In reply to: Jason 's message, "PCS to Okinawa - Soft pet carrier allowed on AMC?" on 05/24/06 9:34

I'm sure Jason already found the answer to this question by now, as it is Oct. and he posted his question in May!
Sorry for the delayed response - but I PCS'ed out of Okinawa, and am only now getting back to business w/keeping tabs on messages here! My apologies!

To anyone reading this who needs the same question answered... the answer is NO... you CANNOT use a soft-sided carrier on any AMC flights!

We travelled to the U.S. from Oki on AMC (until we reached CONUS, at which point we travelled commercial). We had to take our soft sided cat carrier with us and put it through luggage to use on our later flights.

We had NO commercial airlines require a hard-sided carrier. Everyone seemed content with WHATEVER form of containment we chose. Our cat carrier is one of those pricey backpack things (which we LOVE). The bigger "cabin" approved carrier you can find, the better.

AMC requires the SMALLEST hard-sided carrier known to mankind for their in-cabin animal guests. :o( It's awful, but atleast cats naturally enjoy very small, cramped spaces in general... so it's really only "us" (the owners) who cringe at the idea. Our cat was very content and didn't voice a single complaint the entire flight. :)

As for dogs.. same rule applies. Small dogs in the cabin must be in a small, hard sided kennel.

I will have ALL this info (and more) on my AMC PET FLYING page ASAP. I'm just trying to compile the info carefully, and make SURE it's correct before I post it for all the world to see! I have been in touch with several AMC passenger terminals, and it seems that EACH terminal (overseas) seems to have a DIFFERENT answer to the SAME questions! Figures! In the end.. the bottom line is CALL the terminals you'll be using BEFORE your flight (months before), and confirm the details MORE THAN ONCE (call them SEVERAL times).. because each time you'll get a different answer.

THE GOOD NEWS: OUR PET TRAVEL EXPENSES WERE REIMBURSED BY THE ARMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Therefore, "financial burden" is no longer a valid excuse for those in Okinawa who decide it's just too expensive to ship their pets home!!!!

More soon........
