Subject: Bela Lugosi (1882-1956) A Great Actor

Bela Lugosi died 56 years ago, on August 16, 1956.

Born Bela Blasko on October 20, 1882, his earliest film roles were in his native Hungary in 1917. Political upheaval forced him to flee his homeland in 1919, and he subsequently appeared in a few German motion pictures.

Lugosi arrived in the United States in December 1920 aboard a merchant ship landing in New Orleans. Making his way to New York, he continued acting. His first American film role was in The Silent Command (1923) starring Edmund Lowe.

In 1927 Lugosi played Dracula on the stage for the first time, on Broadway. Edward Van Sloan was in the stage production as well, as Van Helsing.

Dracula (1931) made Bela Lugosi an international film star, and remains the role he is most identified with.

I've always wondered what would have happened if Bela Lugosi had lived on another 10 years or so?
I know his last roles were in a handful of cheap movies.

But had he lived on after his old movies started playing on TV on the Shock Theater shows around the country, he became very popular and gained many new fans, including myself.

You would think that Bela would have been offered better horror roles after his popularity soared from the TV exposure.

But unfortunately, it's something we'll never know for sure.

R.I.P. Bela.
