Subject: Karloff & Lugosi

I just watched "Werewolf of London" with my cousin on Saturday night and we got thinking about the original plan by Universal, (or so we've heard) for Boris Karloff to play Dr Glendon, the werewolf played by Henry Hull and Bela Lugosi as Dr Yogami in Warner Oland's part.

Now I really enjoy WoL the way it is, but I can't help wondering if the movie would have been better? It would have been interesting to see.

We discussed "Black Friday" too, but I don't think Boris Karloff would have played the dual role of Kingsly/Cannon as well as Stanley Ridges did. But I sure would have loved to see Karloff and Lugosi at least have a few scenes together.

We also talked about "Man Made Monster" and the original idea for it to be a Karloff & Lugosi movie. I would have liked to see how it would have played out, just out of curiosity with the two stars, but I really liked the way it turned out with Lon Chaney Jr and Lionel Atwill.

It would certainly have been interesting to see Boris Karloff as Dr Glendon and Bela Lugosi as Dr Yogami in Werewolf of London. The movie was originally intended to be a Karloff vehicle, but the production was scheduled to commence around the same time as Bride of Frankenstein, which also starred Karloff.

Having Karloff and Lugosi as stars would probably have made Werewolf of London a bigger success at the theaters. Although it was not a huge box office hit at the time of its release, I believe it holds up well among the Universal horror pictures.
