may pros and cons yan. internet voting will always favor asians and latinas because of our passion for beauty pageants.

some people may say that internet voting worked for karla, but the same cannot be said for mafae yunon and kate manalo. during mafae's and kate's time, traditional judging are still being used. at that time, internet voting may just be a launch pad, but it will not guarantee you to get to the finish line.

in fairness to karla, she had one of the best answers in the top 5. poland and peru had difficulty expressing themselves. so if i were a judge, i would have handed a 3rd or 2nd place to karla because of her response. but because it was based on internet voting, karla had to settle for a 4th place finish.

internet voting made karla reach the top 5, but it also prevented her from reaching the top 3.

in a nutshell, internet voting may work like a double-bladed sword.

WALANG MAS SUPERIOR AT WALANG MAS INFERIOR!! KAYA NGA LAHAT SILA MAY CHANCES OF WINNING KSI NGA PANTAY PANTAY AT SABAY SABAY SILANG KASALE SA BAWAT COMPETITION NA SINALIHAN NILA E!!

Juliana deserves to be our candidate to the Miss Universe because of her physical attributes and personality. It's so unfortunate that the BPCI rejected her application because the org is haunted by the so-called "morality".

But don't get me wrong by saying that we should be immoral. What I'm trying to say is that the morality of the BPCI is based on what others will say about them. Juliana was rejected because of her sexy image, "writing sexy themes in the magazine", etc. I guess what worries BPCI is that if she would be accepted in the Bb. Pilipinas, the org might raise the eyebrows of some very conventional Flips.

But please bear in mind that in order to be competitive in the Miss Universe, aside from the physical features and the way of carrying the swimsuit and evening gown, intelligence should also be taken into consideration, especially in the crucial "final question". And by intelligence we mean UNCONVENTIONAL intelligence, not easily influenced by others, which is our weakness as Filipinos. This is what separates Miss Universe from Miss World, which adheres to the motto "beauty with a purpose" (well, until last year). Had the BPCI sent Ruffa Gutierrez to the Miss Universe in 1993, we could have won the crown because she is witty, not to mention that she's beautiful.

The kind of morality that the BPCI is promoting was responsible for the winning of first runner-up by Miriam Quiambao in 1999 (she could have won the title). The question was "If the Miss Universe got pregnant, should she continue her reign?" (correct me, Cher, if I typed the wrong question). If you are a Filipino, you will have difficulty in answering this question because you are strongly affected by the "reputation" culture and the issue on virginity, not to mention the powerful influence by the Catholic teachings. I'm pretty confident that Miriam was not able to answer the question straight to the point because she is haunted by the moral dilemma that was imposed to her by our society (a "dalagang Pilipina" should not get pregnant, for instance). Mpule Kwelagobe won the title because she believes that the Miss Universe "should celebrate her femininity" and pregnancy should not be a hindrance to continue her reign, and we Filipinos find her answer very unconventional and against our norms (or probably, scandalous to some). In short, that question "challenged" our morality.

Let's accept that Miss Universe is not an avenue to promote our culture, perhaps we should limit that to the National Costume portion. You guys mentioned that the pageant has changed a lot, prioritizing "commercialism" over "tradition". Juliana has a good chance of winning the third crown for our country because of her beauty and wit, but sadly, she can't make it to the Binibining Pilipinas because she's unconventional and not "mayumi" and "mabini".

miss universe and miss world, sabi nila is being viewed billions worldwide. ang totoo in the recent years kabog na sa ratings ang beauty pageants. di na mabenta at major US tv stations are into shows that rate good. and sponsors don't care kung mabenta sa sa iilang countries lang. not being racy here but would they care kung mabenta sa pinas kung di na bumebenta sa US? reasons why they made candidates all wear bikinis and they have gone internet voting or txt, to make the audience worldwide participate. also, why they are putting spunk into it, para di na yung conventional=boring.

first, there was karla bautista. she gives a good fight in every pageant she goes. but then, a major factor why she made it was p'rolly the new system.

gionna looks good in her pictures. but then again, marami sa atin ang nationalistic and would take time out to vote. other countries don't too much hype in these competitions in the same degree as others.

i kinda see the trend in the future na palaging may say ang pinas dahil sa new system.

with the new system, ano pa ang kredebilidad ng pagkapanalo natin kung mananalo rin dahil sa support dahil kababayan natin at karangalan ng pinas kahit mas may deserving na iba? di kaya maging bukambibig na "pilipinas expected to win or pinas ang nanalo kasi internet voting," at maging katawa-tawa? but then, they made it the new system for whatever reasons

anong say nyo sa new system?

First is I just think that Mrs. Stella Araneta should stop sending Philippine representatives to the Miss Universe Pageant for at least 5 years because it clearly shows that the Philiipines has been in its lowest since Miriam Quiambao.

If she still decides to send representatives then she should start thinking from now:

1. Binibining Pilipinas should not be held every February of each particular year because May of Miss Universe is too soon for preparations.

2. I know you are nationalistic but please please do not send our beauty queens to your country Colombia. If you do not trust the Filipino capacity send the ladies to India for training at least its an asian country.

3. the Barazza collections are good i agree but it would be more nationalistic if we choose our own couturiers here because I believe that there are competent ones here.

4. Never ever use the Maria Clara anymore because it only depicts the hispanic influence of the Philippines and I want to remind you that even if its in our blood we are filipinos so start usine the TERNO like what Imelda Marcos were using. You can even borrow from her collections and I think she would be glad to have it worn. Look back Mrs Araneta and view all the past tapes of Miss Universe. Representatives that used the terno went their way up. When Chat Silayan competed in Thailand she wore a terno with a parasol she placed 3rd runner up when Miriam competed she wore a terno and she landed 1st runner up. I am not against Maria Clara but Terno is not only regal but also very Filipino. I know you understnd what Im saying.

5. Look for the likes of Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran, Aurora Pijuan etc. If you come to think of it what do they have in common? - BREED, INTELLIGENCE, CLASS, and these are the real factors that will make us click you want to ask why? because all of these are INERT not studied. Look for nearly polished jewels. I am not being hypocritical here but these girls also have something in comon - they all come from exclusive schools. This is not insulting your other "choices" because Gionna is I agree a very good contestant after Miriam Quiambao. As a matter of fact this years winners are so far the best choices that you ever had after ages.

6. When you screen contestants for God sake take away politics because no matter what happens you are there and no one can take you off the hook but every year your very name specially the name you are bearing - A R A N E T A - is starting to diminish because of credibility and thats a pity.

7 so? start cleaning your mess and better be good otherwise stop holding binibining pilipinas and just go on with your charitable causes here in the philippines or your home country it will make you feel better.

8 I would like to tell you that I agree that Gionna has been very very good but like Binibining Pilipinas Miss Universe has also its own political way of doing things i bet i am not the only person who thinks this way. I am not sourgraping i am only thinking that all these exercise is nothing if we do not produce the real competent ones if we are just hanging on to luck well....pick up any girl that you think is passable. train her and send her dont spend for binibinib pilipinas anymore because its just like what you have there in araneta center - FIESTA CARNIVAL.

Julia Morley, Chairman of the Miss World Organization

2005 marks the 55th year of the Miss World competition. Following on from the success of last year's contest in China, we are pleased to be returning to Sanya and to the home of Miss World, the Sheraton Sanya Resort.

Miss World is so much more than a simple beauty contest. It is unique. Through our "Beauty with a Purpose" programme, we have raised over £500 million pounds for children's charities throughout the world. Last year, the China Charity Federation was a major beneficiary of the many activities supported by Miss World and this year we will continue that association along with the charity that Miss World has supported for over 40 years, Variety, The Children's Charity.

Miss World 2005 will bring together contestants from 110 countries, which makes us close to the Olympics in terms of the number of countries represented. The 110 contestants will all bring gifts to be auctioned at a spectacular gala dinner to raise money for charities in China. In addition, each representative will bring a book illustrative of her country. These books from around the world will make up the ‘Miss World library', which will be donated to a school in China.

The major feature of our new TV format is that we now organise not one but eleven major television events during the 3-week event period. Each special programme gives one contestant an opportunity to fast track in to the Miss World Final. The 10 fast track events for 2005 are:

1. Beach Beauty
2. Sport & Fitness
3. Top Fashion Model
4. Performing Talent
5. Contestants' Choice
6. Hospital Beauty
7. Heart of Gold Charitable Queen
8. Sohu's Choice
9. Mount Climbing Beauty
10. CFN 'Chinese Food Network' Beauty

For the first time, Miss World will introduce a cooking competition. The best recipes and presentation will be evaluated by professional chinese chefs, and the winner will fast-track into the finals. This recipe can include pastries, exotic dishes, it's a total celebration of international cuisine.

A panel of judges will select another Top 10 beauties, completing the Top 20 finalists of the 2005 contest.

The 55th Miss World is therefore a celebration of beauty culture, peace and understanding, set against a background of achievement and excellence. It is an example to young women all over the world of what they can accomplish.

The Miss World Organisation is also pleased to announce that SOHU, China’s leading entertainment portal, has signed a 3-year deal with Miss World to be its official web partner in China. This will bring the Miss World brand into millions of Chinese homes. Charles Zhang, Chairman and CEO of SOHU said he was delighted to be involved with the biggest show in the world.

SOHU will soon be announcing their exciting plans for the 55th Miss World.

Miss World is one of the most watched annual entertainment events. Last year 162 nations saw the event with a viewing audience in excess 2.5 billion people. This year the audience will be even bigger.

Miss World 2005 will take place on December 10th.

See you in Sanya!
