All yarn can be rescued... you just need a lot of patience.
Some skeins have portions that get knots so tight they have to be cut away. With gentle hands you can usually save the entire skein.

When trying to untangle the yarn, do not pull on the strands very hard as this will knot it up worse. Pull the strands using very little tension... beginning with one end start winding the yarn into a ball while you work that ball back and forth through the tangled yarn to free it.
