Author: Michael Glasscock
Subject: Francis Nichols

Francis Nichols was born 25 May 1575 in Sedgeberrow, County Worcester, England, and married his first wife Frances Wimarke on 24 January 1600 in England. He, his wife, and their children emigrated to New England and settled first in Massachusetts. They were among the first families in the new settlement of Stratford, Connecticut. Due to his experience, the General Court appointed him Sergeant of the first Stratford Trainband that provided security for the new town.

This book provides the details the first four generations of the family and gives the names of generation five. The Nichols family is discussed in The History of Stratford and Bridgeport, Connecticut by the Reverend Samuel Orcutt published in 1886. It is also briefly covered in The Families of Old Fairfield by Donald Lines Jacobus. These previous works contain a some information on the early generations. They do a reasonable job on the male lines. However, female lines are incomplete or scattered among other families.

The new genealogy adds information on the female lines and corrects some errors for the first five generations found in the cited works. Research is underway to extend this genealogy to the present. Biographical material is added. Detailed source references are given, often to primary records. Along with the text are photographs of tombstones. There are indexes of people and places. The book is bound in soft-cover and is printed on acid-free paper.
