As you know most of my birds sleep in happy huts. I'm all for a safe warm place for them to take cover in. The only problem I see with happy huts is, if they chew them up. Then I would be worried. Once chewed is when they become dangerous with strings or the bird getting in between the fabric, etc. I think you can try this: Take a 3 or 4 inch PVC pipe, cut it to the size you think will fit your bird in length. Wrap it with vet wrap tape (any feed store has this in colors) so it's not so slippy. Then drill a hole on top, on each end and put a chain through it. It's a safe happy hut, not so chewable for any bird. Just replace the vet tape often as it may get worn out. Also hang it on the side of the cage so it doesn't move around and scare your bird. It's not going to be soft or warm but it's just another idea that you might want to try. If your bird likes the tube PVC then you can make a warm cover to slip over it that would be removable for washing. But then your back to fabric and strings.
