Subject: Question re Critical Hours

Hi - long time, no DX. Hoping to hit the dials for a few hours this winter; it seems like I always log new stations if I just make the effort.

I've been looking at the FCC station lists and had a question about critical hours - what exactly are they, and are daytimers allowed to operate during them?

I've assumed that as a given day progresses, stations move through different sequences according to their licenses:

daytime power - s/off
daytime power - c.h. power - s/off
daytime power - c.h. power - night power

So, if a station does not a specified c.h. power, are they allowed to run daytime power until the end of critical hours, and then sign off?

Thanks!
